Bernie Sanders' stepdaughter runs for his old mayor's job

By Associated Press December 4 at 10:35 AM

MONTPELIER, Vt. — Bernie Sanders’ stepdaughter is running for mayor of Burlington, Vermont, the same office that was the starting point for the independent U.S. senator’s political career.

Carina Driscoll announced her candidacy on Monday. She is a former city council member and ex-state legislator, and she says she will run as an independent.

Democratic Mayor Miro Weinberger is expected to seek re-election in March.

Driscoll says she will work to bring Burlington “to again be that vibrant, forward-thinking city where we are all so proud to live.”

Excerpt:

Driscoll announced her candidacy through a news release Monday morning. She will challenge her former boss, Democratic Mayor Miro Weinberger.

“Over the past couple years I have become increasingly concerned that we are headed in the wrong direction,” Driscoll said.

She said her main priority would be to bring more “unity” to Burlington. There is a lack of community input regarding the future of public assets like the Moran Plant, Memorial Auditorium, Burlington Telecom and others, she said.

“We’re living in this time of rapid development. We need to make sure that the citizens, that the people of Burlington are being brought into the process,” she said.
