My local county party uses them to sell tickets to the fund raisers because of the low cost on taking credit cards.

A quick note of clarification for the last commenter. ActBlue provides its service at no cost to campaigns, and it does not take a cut. As with any credit card processing arrangement, ActBlue incurs processing fees in the course of helping Democratic candidates, and it passes those fees on to the campaigns.

One of the reasons that more than 2,500 campaigns and committees have used ActBlue is that ActBlue keeps the cost to campaigns several times below the costs of using the dominant for-profit processing systems; below the costs of using its fledgling Republican counterparts, SlateCard, which keeps some of the profit; and even below the costs of using industry-leading charitable giving sites like JustGiving.org and FirstGiving.
Moreover, ActBlue is widely recognized for its commitment to transparency in campaign finance, and regularly endorses sunlight provisions (http://blog.actblue.com/blog/2008/02/actblue-endorse.html). You can read more about ActBlue’s financing on their website, http://www.actblue.com.
The real innovation behind ActBlue, from the perspective of campaigns, was that they were able to simplify the process of compliance reporting for campaigns, and cut costs associated with credit card processing, by creating an economy of scale. In the past, the burden of processing small contributions was prohibitive. But because of this economy of scale, ActBlue makes it feasible for campaigns to accept contributions of even $1. Better for democracy, wouldn’t you say?
