(18,791 posts)That's pretty cool.
Closest that I've been to a President was seeing Air Force One (Clinton) at JFK, waiting to take off. And the back of Jimmy Carter getting into a car, on the ramp at Hartsfield.
You actually touched a President.
marym625
(17,997 posts)I flipped off bush and he looked right at me
Not that many people, in the scheme of things, have seen a President in person

virtualobserver
(8,760 posts)I would not have had the courage to do that.
marym625
(17,997 posts)He had already started the war in Iraq and I had a few relatives either there or about to go. So it took no courage. Just anger

(17,997 posts)The counter inauguration was great. They sure did mess with us though. Kept people as far away as possible if they knew why we were there. Which was usually pretty obvious

(9,126 posts)Wear it proudly. Now go get a picture with our next future president!
marym625
(17,997 posts)Of when I met President Carter, VP Mondale or astronaut Col. James Irwin. Have a picture of my dad with the latter but I was just a little kid.
BrotherIvan
(9,126 posts)Living in LA, it's pretty hard to get that close access, or maybe I'm too lazy to sit in traffic. I never really see presidents as everyday people because I have never met one. I think it's cool to see them and get a read for them. I have met Pelosi a few times, and well...
marym625
(17,997 posts)Even if we don't agree on politics, except for a few Republican Presidents, it's cool meeting powerful people.
I met Carter and Mondale because a friend of my dad's (my dad was in politics) in the village we lived in, was Mondale's sister in law. I was friends with 2 of his nieces and campaigned for both. Lucked out.
BrotherIvan
(9,126 posts)I met Pelosi just after she had become speaker. Let's just say none of the poors at the event fell in love.

(1,557 posts)My in-laws met Jimmy Carter when they were flying back from visiting family in France. The closest I ever got to a head of state was when my co-worker and I briefly left the ATC tower and waved down at German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who waved back. (It was a quiet afternoon, save for that one arrival.)
marym625
(17,997 posts)I just got really lucky.
Did they, your in laws, get to speak with him? I think he's one of the best people on the planet
historylovr
(1,557 posts)President Carter was going through the plane shaking hands and talking with everyone before departure. I agree; he really is.

(17,997 posts)I know there are people in the US that follow the politics/elections of many other countries. But on average, not so much. I only do when things are crazy. Lately, that's but pretty much the norm. But people in other countries watch us all the time. And for good reason.
One of my favorite protest songs is from France and it talks about bush, among many other things.

(7,300 posts)I got to meet President Ford when he came to our football practice. It was unannounced and the team was floored as we were in the "poor kids" league where we rented our equipment and our jerseys were donated from schools that bought new ones. I liked it cuz we only had 13 kids on the team so I got lots of playing time. And President Ford was real nice.

(5,141 posts)I met President Clinton when I was walking my dog in a park near where we both live, and he stopped me to talk about the dog (he was a gorgeous and GIGANTIC chocolate lab/Great Dane mix) and we chatted about 10 minutes. I can tell you after that I understood why he was such a hit with the ladies. Great looking, charismatic, the whole 9 yards. Obama seems to me to be that type as well (I think they have similar birthdates so maybe its a Leo thing).
When the man smiles, I swoon...
Certainly would have hit on him if he weren't married. Knowing me, I was probably flirting.
Extremely cool to hear Clinton was so friendly. Glad you got to meet him!

(34,589 posts)The closest I ever got to a President was Bush Jr., I happened to be staying in the hotel next to his in Indianapolis. Damned snipers or whatever scary people that were on roof kept their eyes on me as I walked to and from the hotel.
You look like the sunny person I'd expect from your writing.
I'm envious!
