Bernie Sanders
Related: About this forumIowa Party Dinner, Bernie next to esteemed opponents on July 17.
I thought Hillary did fairly well, but I would have liked some legislative proposals.
Bernie was chock full of specifics, some of them great. He closed by talking about social rights for black Americans. It was one of the proudest moments for me of the entire speech.
His hair was tamed, yet he seemed quite a fire breather anyway, expressing the anger of most of us. His cadence was good and he seemed remarkably natural and he seems to ad lib from an outline. He carries yellow sheafs with him after he leaves the podium. In his own way a very good speaker. All-in-all, he seems to be the big winner tonight.

Rachel had some coverage before the speeches...actually Bernie got some good plugs.
It's still on for me but it's just people milling around.

(891 posts)The crowd was cheering and chanting for him. He did very well. I also thought that O'Malley gave a good speech too and he is my second choice behind Bernie.

(3,859 posts)I thought his delivery was so-so, but I think he will be an effective debater.
When Bernie called on his brothers and sisters, it was a moment of clarity for me. That speech by Jimmy Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes To Washington where he says "love thy neighbor." It is OK again to call on your sisters and brothers.
When he called for a revolution, a thrill went up my spine. "Think big!"
I'm not sure if a sanders O'malley ticket is ideal, but I wouldn't be opposed to it at all.
But remember!
Vote in the primary!

(14,177 posts)He seems like a nice enough person and I am glad he has a good understanding of immigration issues. So, I watched the mingling after the speeches. The camera person focused a lot on Bernie, then about 10 seconds on O'Malley, then a bit longer on Webb who answered some questions from a reporter.
I was a bit surprised by a couple of things. Bernie is actually a real people person. He loves the crowds he hugs people and laughs with them and has really good eye contact and doesn't seem to give people the impression they have talked too long. O'Malley is sort of the same only more low key IMO and personality wise I prefer this style. Webb seems a bit aloof I think he went through some bad stuff that still affects him, I could be wrong. I don't hold it against him and I don't think his personality is a disqualifier, I actually am a bit aloof myself for whatever reason. All in all I was very happy about how all three of them interacted with people. I didn't see Hillary so I can't say anything about that.

(3,859 posts)And even though it seemed they filtered the crowd audio reaction differently during Bernie's speech (high volume?), I could tell we were outa sight. I really want to see this again.

(130 posts)I DVR'd it and am just finishing up Jim Webb right now.
My thoughts, off the cuff:
Chaffee is a good man, but not a good public speaker. That got in the way of really hearing what he had to say.
Clinton is a rock star as a speaker but fails to actually say anything. But boy, can she rev people up! She had us revved up here at the house and it wasn't until we listened to Martin that we realized she didn't say anything that wasn't just political theater.
O'Malley is a solid speaker and I could easily be an O'Malley supporter.
Bernie rocked it. Solid speech, comfortable - not too angry - but I felt like his entire career had been practice for this 2016 election.
Webb is a good man. I see him as a possible VEEP for anyone, with his military background but he's not a 'stump speaker'.
JMO on first viewing. Will re-watch tomorrow.

(130 posts)He mentioned Koch Bros, oligarchy, and Citizens United and at one point the camera was on Hillary. She clearly mouths the words 'that's true', nodding along to what he was saying. Interesting - she knows it's true.
