Some people just aren't getting it.

Last edited Sat Aug 15, 2015, 12:15 AM - Edit history (2)

Christopher Hedges has recently described the state of American politics as being like the slow-boil stage of a revolution. People are angry. Faith in our political institutions is at an all-time low. Even those who have had little interest in politics heretofore are recognizing that corporate greed has undermined our democracy and is hollowing out what's left of the middle class. Eight years ago, the electorate's anger with the status quo lead to the surprise election of Barack Obama. The flame has been heating the pot ever since and it's made the political landscape highly unstable. Per Hedges, as revolutionary forces build, it becomes increasingly likely that candidates far outside of the mainstream--right or left of center--will enjoy a viability they could never have gained before, and we're seeing this with Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders.

Yet on DU, I'm surprised on a daily basis by the number of posters who don't seem to get it. They blithely remark that Hillary Clinton has nothing at all to be concerned about regarding Bernie Sanders. She's a shoo-in, they say.

Wake up, folks. Business as usual, as a political strategy, is dead. Who are these dinosaurs who are so out of touch with the political mood?

Musing on the above, I made my latest Photoshop effort below. I gave serious thought to putting a pantsuit on the T-Rex, but I think that's beyond my limited skill set. Enjoy. RAWR!

All I did was add on the Bernie and Hillary logos and add some labels to the dinos in the water. The real talent, of course, belongs to whoever did the original graphic. I've been trying to find out the artist's name, so I can give him or her credit, but so far, no luck.

Very few people are left who benefit from the old system. They are the dinosaurs, and some of them live here on DU.

Their time is running out- status quo is killing our ecosystem, which in turn will kill us.

The clock is ticking.

to pose an analogy using the Greek political parties (Golden Dawn=fascist, KKE=left communist). The entire middle of the country is filled with conservative people - at least culturally conservative and pro-militaru. Fascism would be much easier to institute via revolution than socialism.

I think electing someone like Bernie is the only way we presently can get back to the type of economy people here in the US enjoyed in the 40's-70s (pre-Reagan), pull back the corporations, tax appropriately etc. And it may even be too late for someone like him in these post-9-11 times. It's worth a try though and that is why I am supporting him.

place to be thrown civily, by voting for Bernie. His use of the word "oligarchy" is spot on...perhaps the last stand. Pure capitalism leads to oligarchy...the best of the best (for whatever societal reason) rise to the top and have the means to rule by proxy/politician.

Eight more years of corporately funded proxies constrict the scope of opposition to where more literal pitchforks are needed to reverse the trend. It can happen...at the voting booth this cycle, but it ultimately will happen.

They can benefit later from our hard work.

We aren't going to change them, but they are not going to grow. People are attracted to things that are escalating. We can really just do our thing and ignore them. They wil be disappointed, maybe a bit sour, and eventually much better off.

Is the total lack of cool positive memes, photos plays, toons, witticisms
in regard to the one who shall not be named on the internet..they are mostly negative and crude. vs Bernie's numerous creative renditions by his supporters

Bernie's are 90% positive for the most part. and numerous if you really do a search

Now I think that's something important, on how much presence he has on the internet and that Bernie's message is dominating the internet vs all other candidates........

I think there's something to your observation. Bernie has struck a chord and it's resonating and there's a lot of creative energy out there.

I'm excited. And yet I say that while still thinking of what an uphill, against-the-odds struggle lies ahead. The comparison of the status-quo players to dinosaurs is apt not only in the sense that their time may be coming to an end, but also in the sense that they are HUGE, powerful players, with enormous strengths. If the mainstream media lock arms and are determined to sink the Bernie Sanders campaign through either lack of coverage or biased coverage, it will take a lot to overcome that. I'm not even sure it's possible, frankly.

But I know I want to try.

This is why I critiqued Martin O'Malley's optimistic tone (as being the only candidate who is optimistic) - O'Malley's optimism is misplaced; if anyone is optimistic about the state of our country (political process, inequality, etc.) or the planet (climate crises), et. al. they just aren't paying attention.
