Bernie Sanders
Related: About this forumVoters raised on social media reject soundbite culture.... Corbyn Win./ Sanders.
One poll found 57% of Corbyn supporters use social media as their main source of news, far above the national average. Corbyns team have increasingly rejected traditional outlets, refusing to speak to The Sun the UKs biggest-selling newspaper.
Traditional political attacks dont work among this support base: Attempts by opponents to portray the MP as an extremist with a tendency to share platforms with unpalatable speakers fell flat or even backfired spectacularly in the case of Tony Blairs repeated interventions. Even a newspaper headline that accused Corbyn, somewhat out of context, as saying he thought Osama Bin Ladens death was a tragedy didnt stick. Instead, it just hardened his supporters resolve to face down what they perceive to be the unfair attacks of a worried elite. What actually went viral were lengthy Corbyn speeches or large paragraphs of texts setting out his political worldview.
Corbyns ad hoc campaign massively outperformed his opponents top-down media bombardment.
The establishment candidates fought more traditional campaigns that relied heavily on set-piece speeches and carefully controlled announcements. Corbyn took to the streets and let his supporters do the work on his campaigns behalf. Volunteers flooded into phone banks and venues were booked and paid for by local groups, with the left-wing MP forced to address crowds on the street who had been turned away.
Corbyn engaged with young party activists on an enormous scale.
This led to a mass surge of new supporters and activists into the party. Its telling that a generation of young left-wingers who came of age during the era of anti-austerity and Occupy protests found an outlet in the form of a white-haired, old-school socialist. Warnings from the party establishment that his policies were unworkable and a throwback to Labours wilderness years in the 1980s were dismissed as ancient history for a start, many of the young Corbyn supporters werent even born in that decade.
The lesson of the Corbyn campaign is that you ignore the mass mobilisation of a partys young party activists behind a candidate at your peril. Who says young people arent interested in politics? Politics wasnt interested in young people, a delighted 66-year-old Corbyn told supporters at his victory rally, where some Corbyn activists could be overheard talking about flying out to the US to help out Sanders.

(14,255 posts)Reddit - Hillary Clinton - 648 subscribers, none currently online
Reddit - Bernie Sanders - 104,198 subscribers, 1683 of them currently online
This is not some newly created campaign-driven popularity at Reddit for Bernie - he has done some AMA's, the reddit readers liked his answers - and then they did the research. They do not watch commercials. Or political TV. or, I think, much TV at all, except online. No shiny brochures. I don't know how many even watch TV on a regular basis. They do not hate Hillary, they just do not care about her. She represents the same old Wall Street corporate stuff to them. They are totally issue-driven, not DNC driven. I think this is the future of politics.
Edited to add - they don't just hang out at reddit. They are massively organised. They raise money. they keep track of events. They tell people how to register, when to vote. Right now they have passed $250,000 in donations, and their next goal is $300,000. They have a sub-reddit for each state, kept up to date.
All because they love Bernie on the issues.
Issues. Issues.

(2,161 posts)What's she going to do with the money? Buy TV ads. When 10% of the people in the US gave up their cable service in the last year. And the ones who still watch TV use their DVR and never watch commercials.
I'd rather go into the GE with Bernie and enthusiastic young people blanketing social media, standing on street corners with signs, and persuading their parents/grandparents to vote for Bernie for their future.
If Democrats want to WIN, we will follow the lead of the young people. Yesterday's campaign methodology won't cut it in 2015.

(15,480 posts)So they will keep telling candidates to buy more and more and more ads - until the money runs out. There has been some research on the law of diminishing returns on advertising dollars - and that certainly kicks in on political advertising.
Clinton can raise and spend a billion dollars or 2 billion dollars - whatever - it's an obscene waste of money - and if she thinks the Dems will bail out her campaign debts like they did last time, she has another think coming.
Bill solicited $12 million from god-knows-what corporations, One Percenters, and/or foreign governments to pay off campaign debts from her last race. So add that $12 million to the other many $millions of quid pro quos to be "honored" by the Clintons, should she be elected. But when she loses this time, there will be no further political offices for either Clinton. At that point, they'll have no quids to offer for quos, and there will be no campaign debt payoffs, and certainly those big corporate & foreign government bribes - oh, I mean charitable donations - to the Clinton Family Foundation will come to a screeching halt.

Hillary Clinton's campaign debt finally paid off
Posted by
CNN Political Research Director Robert Yoon
Washington (CNN) More than four years after suspending her 2008 presidential bid, now-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has finally paid off her campaign debt.
Clinton's presidential organization spent the final day of 2012 paying down the remaining debt, according to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission late Tuesday.
Clinton's debt reached its peak in June 2008 shortly after the former New York senator suspended her campaign. At that point, her presidential committee owed $12 million to almost 500 creditors and $13.2 million to the candidate herself, who dipped into her personal funds to help finance her campaign.
Campaign finance laws forced Clinton to forgive the amount she loaned her committee because she was not able to repay the funds by a required deadline.
A federal law known as the Hatch Act prohibited Clinton and other federal government employees from personally soliciting or accepting political contributions. The law does allow others to raise funds on Clinton's behalf, without her direct involvement. Former President Bill Clinton periodically sent out fundraising appeals to his wife's campaign email list to help retire her debt.

(9,497 posts)I haven't seen one political commercial. I read the news, I get posts in my social media sites and I click on threads here and elsewhere. I don't have the music, images and voice over that is crafted to reach specific areas of my brain.
And I am not unique. The only people I know who watch cable are over 60. But that isn't scientific, I know.
This shift is why 12,000 or 28,000 just ....showed up. Remember the flash mobs? This is running on the same structure.

(36,988 posts)you will notice the DUers that have their TV on and give us the news they get from TV and then those, like myself and others who are totally out of that loop. If you notice their politics you also find a tilt more to the right on those that do watch and those that don't.. Of course there are exceptions but in general I think that the Mean, Median, Mode, and Range of that observation rings true......... TV does effect the mind and not in a good way, I've shown studies that show that it does effect alpha and beta waves in the brain.
What I find also interesting about the UK win is that they TPTB got it wrong.
The Blairites especially...... So I added this story for the great news we also had about Bernie's poll numbers.
Oh, BTW you notice I didn't put the title of the story in for a reason... can you guess why?........LOL.. I bet you can.
Hey? who are those three women in your sig?

I like to laugh but usually find comedy too willing to throw the charater under the bus just for a snort. This show, the characters remain pretty true to their damaged little souls.

(14,747 posts)...is that it can end up being something of an echo chamber, which views you don't like getting filtered out. So right wingers end up with wall to wall right wingery on Farcebook & Tw@tter, and lefties end up with loads of left wing stuff.
Having just unfriended somebody who's broken the golden rule about sharing "Britain First" far right bollocks on Facebook I'm guilty of this myself.

(14,747 posts)However, Corbyn supporters are overwhelmingly more likely to back Sanders over Clinton, and Clinton's biggest allies in the Labour are Blairite wing of the party, who despise Corbyn.
The moderate left needs to learn from what's happened and start engaging with people again rather than offering the same old Blairite rubbish.
Ichingcarpenter
(36,988 posts)because it fit Sanders more than Hillary's fake twitter, social media crap.

(14,747 posts)But their biggest allies in the UK are the ones being hurt most by the rise of social media politics.
If I'm honest, I wish that the moderate left in this country would learn from this and improve. But the whole Blairite model is too negative, very top down and doesn't engage with people.
