(23,156 posts)really sums it up.
When I gave up having a TV nearly eight years ago, I intended it as an experiment. Three earlier times in my life I'd been without a TV, each time for several years, and for various different reasons went back. Now I don't think I ever will.
For one thing, I can watch a lot of things via the internet. For another, there's actually a lot more stuff worth watching than the average person has time for.
But mostly I love not seeing the commercials. When I do get to see them (if I turn on the TV in a hotel room, for instance, or at a friend's house) I'm astonished by the push to buy buy buy. No wonder so many people are in debt, and even those who make decent money assure us solemnly that it's not possible to save any money. It's because most people are very overtly brainwashed to believe they must have a new car, go on fabulous vacations, purchase the latest household appliance, repaint and redecorate their homes frequently, and so on.
A large part of why I'm able to live frugally and not feel very deprived is that I don't see all those blandishments to purchase the latest and best in everything.
Oh, and I likewise am not subject to the ads designed to convince me I have some obscure disease that I now need an expensive medication for.
Look, I know that there are people who really only have just enough to get buy, and there are those with genuine medical needs. But what's pushed on us via the popular media is criminal.

(15,882 posts)are too lazy now, and have no conception of what it would take to get us back. They have no intention of doing the work, making the sacrifice.
Most likely we are just waiting for something bigger than we are to burn it up, whether war, biological attack, earth heating up and getting rid of the ways we used make food.
President Sanders can't do for us what we refuse to do for ourselves. The hole is way too deep. But it will be fun watching.

(15,882 posts)Occupy didn't accomplish much beyond stroking some egos and making money for people who buy bad loans, and we are fighting the results of the Arab Spring in ISIS.
If that's all we got, we are fucked.

(39,215 posts)movies from the 40s. That would give them a small inkling of what it was like before the buying frenzy of they 50s started. There are some things that I would never want to go back to - the outhouse, a wood cook stove, no running water, etc. But life was not bad back then just very hard for women. A lot of "women's work" was physical. Not like throwing the dirty clothes in the washer and dryer.
A lot of the buying frenzy today is in the area of entertainment. We used to listen to the radio. Visit with each other and have card parties.

(15,882 posts)Mules cost money to replace. Desperate people, children, came walking up for free, worked for starvation wages.
IWW tried to get us out of that, but there were easier ways. Appears they mostly lead back to the way things used to be, however.
Mayre we will start fighting again, but I doubt it.

(5,364 posts)It's so pithy and a spot-on synopsis of today's dumbed down dynamic. So much so, that at the present rate we're headed toward a fascist state, that quote/comic/image will be considered downright sedition by the PTB.

(55,981 posts)They ignore the 50,000,000 Americans living in poverty including 16,000,000 children in favor of a dominating authoritarian government that takes their resources, sends their loved ones to die in the middle east, and spies on them. Our founders fought against such a government and would be saddened by the apparent fear today off fighting for our freedoms and liberties, and fighting to feed our hungry children.
It is an oligarchy folks, you can say it. We must get big money out of government and voting for their candidate won't do it.
