Art critics, art historians, aestheticians, and others too often tend to dismiss cartoons and caricatures as silly — not serious — trivial, and irrelevant. Yet as the following list of cartoons and caricatures that have wreaked havoc throughout history should make clear, cartoons can have a powerful psychological, emotional, and political impact.

The Library of Congress has a Digital collection of Political Cartoons and how they have shaped Public Debates. The collection is fascinating. I highly recommend it.

An editorial cartoon, also known as a political cartoon, is an illustration containing a commentary that usually relates to current events or personalities. An artist who draws such images is known as an editorial cartoonist.

They typically combine artistic skill, hyperbole and satire in order to question authority and draw attention to corruption and other social ills.
Political cartoons can usually be found on the editorial page of many newspapers, although a few (such as Garry Trudeau's Doonesbury) are sometimes placed on the regular comic strip page. Most cartoonists use visual metaphors and caricatures to address complicated political situations, and thus sum up a current event with a humorous or emotional picture.

When I logged on this morning and I read my inbox I decided to look up the history of political cartoons and it really is an interesting one.
A cartoon was posted last night here in our group that certainly seems to have underscored the effect that cartoon have on people It was sent to a jury and the jury chose to leave it The responses in the thread were interesting as were comments sent in to the hosts.

-- Alerter's comments: This is exactly what I expect from the Bernie group. Leave it up and carry on. No complaints here.

-- Alerter's comments: This groups SOP is support of Bernie Sanders, not support of the Tea Party.

-- Alerter's comments: This shouldn't be here, it's clearly sourced from a very right wing website. This post should be locked as it does nothing to advance the SOP of this group.

This is the cartoon that gave us the word "gerrymander" because a Massachusetts district, shaped to benefit the allies of Governor Elbridge Gerry, struck cartoonist Elkanah Tisdale as resembling a monster (once he added wings). It came to be called a Gerrymander with the last syllables of "salamander" added to Gerry's name.
