"If we do not win, I will strongly support the Democratic nominee...and hope and believe that others feel exactly the same way. Donald Trump must be defeated Bernie Sanders
The fact is, some supporters do not feel exactly the same way. Anything but. Even with Donald Trump in the Whitehouse, they aint voting for no establishment empty suit. Here are excerpts from a essay by Kathy Copeland Padden was published today, May 1, 2019
Dispatch from a Bernie Sanders Supporter: Vote Blue No Matter Who = Uber Masochism
If you cant see why proclaiming youll VBNMW is waving the white flag of surrender even before the battle is fought, you have no business going within a hundred miles of a voting booth.
This dimwitted philosophy is directly responsible for the piss-poor governance we find ourselves with today. Decades of lesser-evilism voting has shown the establishment youll meekly accept whatever garbage candidates they throw at you. This behavior is not noble, its partisanship rooted in privilege, plain and simple. Its selfish and contemptible and tells us everything we need to know about you as a human being.
(snip)I will not vote for another neoliberal hack. Never.
When push comes to shove, youll fold like a house of cards and do the bidding of the oligarchy like good little serfs. This is not Progressive behavior. If your political philosophy includes no-questions-asked party loyalty, do NOT call yourself a Progressive. You are an unethical Establishment Enabler.
The Democratic Party has no incentive to take the candidacy of Progressives like Sanders and Gabbard seriously, no matter how loud the people clamor for them. Why would they? You have assured the DNC that, in the end, youll just obediently fall in line.
(snip) Sanders was obligated to agree in writing to support the eventual nominee. Im not bound by these constrictions. Neither are you. Bernie will do what Bernie has to do. As will I. As should you.
It would be easy to dismiss this noisy fringe if people like David Sirota and Nina Turner had not been appointed to senior positions in the campaign this year. Confidence building measures might help, like David and Nina saying Vote Blue No Matter Who for example

(55,019 posts)I get the impression there is a reverse situation as well - if Sanders was the nominee there sure seems to be a lot of folks on this site that would not vote for him. at least they sure seem to find all kinds of problems with him and his campaign and bring it up CONSTANTLY, judging from the juries I am called to. personally, I have no problem with any of the folks on our side and will be happy to vote blue period.

(49,035 posts)I've said elsewhere here, it will be the most reluctant vote I've cast in more than 4 decades of voting for Democrats.
But I'll do it anyway, to get the Democratic nominee into the WH.
And then I'll expect Sanders to live up to his campaign pledges, no matter what his crazier supporters want.

I know many people who would certainly be less than thrilled to cast their GE votes for Sanders, BUT THEY AREN'T FUCKING STUPID. If he is the DEMOCRATIC nominee, he gets all our votes.
BECAUSE - WORTH SAYING AGAIN:
WE AREN'T FUCKING STUPID. OR COMPLETE ASSHOLES.
(which someone would have to be, to not vote for the Dem nominee in 2020. Or in 2016 for that matter!!)

But if he is the Democratic Nominee he will get my vote with no hesitation.
And that is all I have seen on DU. Lot of people dont like the guy. They would all vote for him over trump. Or any republican for that matter. I sure would.

(68,667 posts)I don't like Sanders but would vote for him...vote for any nominee. The person who wrote this basically is worthless. I am a tired of being blackmailed. They need to work on getting more people to agree with them. We need to attract moderate voters and tell this sort to fuck off.

(2,412 posts)I am supportive of any Democratic Party candidate and will vote for them. But I also support Sanders ideas and Warrens ideas. Instead of a winner take all attitude, if a centrist wins the nomination, they should include policies of the left in their platform. Its only fair. I am a retired bilingual migrant teacher whose parents loved Roosevelt. Not all Sanders supporters are nut jobs.

(43,499 posts)Not ONE federal Democratic office holder is a socialist. I have ZERO clue why they keep trying to redefine the term. A democratic socialist wants to do away with capitalism and have the state assume control of basically all major means of production. Not even present-day Bernie advocates for this. AOC certainly does not. Old school 70's and 80's Bernie did. Maybe he is misrepresenting himself all this time and just pretending to be a social democrat. He certainly has despicable supporters and surrogates like the odious Nina Turner and the duplicitous David Sirota. I trust them as far as a monkey can fling poo.
This hipster, radical chic pose is neither honest nor wise, regardless of the Twitter street cred it garners. SOME of his 'movement' supporters (non DU) are indeed a clear and present danger to the entire country as they attempt to kneecap the only viable resistance to Trump and the multivariate demons he enables and raises up.
Some (obviously not referring to anyone on DU) of Sanders' core minions use democratic rhetoric with undemocratic intent. That is classic Kremlin style non-linear warfare and reflexive control.
democratic with a small d btw.

Historically, the most progressive Democrats like FDR and RFK have also been the ones most opposed to socialism.

(7,277 posts)liked to tell this story against his predecessor, R.J. Thomas who followed Trotsky.
Thomas was meeting with Ford workers to discuss his strategy to unionise the workplace. He made the mistake of saying something like, Come the revolution brothers, you will all be driving Lincolns. One employee spoke up. He said I dont want to drive a Lincoln. Thomas lost his temper: Come the revolution comrade he said You will do as youre damn well told!. The meeting was not a success.
Of course it was made up (or I hope it was) but it gets the point across.

(43,499 posts)There is so so much (on both sides) disinfo about the first half of the century American socialist/communist banter. I hate authoritarianism of all types, and so so much of the far far left has that as its core. Obviously so does the oligarchic version of crony/predatory capitalism. For me the bottom line is that we do NOT have to sublimate the vast majority of most private enterprise to to state control AND we simply must stop regulatory capture as well.

(742 posts)If this author talked like that to my face, I'd have to give her a piece of my mind. And I don't like confrontation. But the ACA in any form (any Blue candidate), is better than no ACA (trump). The EPA back up and running (any freaking Blue candidate) is better than the current EPA (under trump). Abortion rights (under any freaking Blue candidate) is better than what trump is doing. I could go on and on. And her calling me a "little self-absorbed package", "dimwitted" and "selfish, contemptible, unethical establishment enabler makes me want to to to to . . .. . Well, they are fighting words. (42,862 posts)Thank you for sharing this! We need to know what kind of kooks (all kinds) that we must deal with.
Clearly, they've already made up their mind and it's not worth anyone's time to try and cajole or validate them... especially with no guarantee of results. It's much wiser to invest the SAME amount of time in getting a dozen NEW voters excited about supporting the party rather than wasting that time on one unreliable voter.
Basically, what we're dealing with here is the Sarandon wing and the Nina Turner wing of the party. The pouters and the butthurt cynics who feel ENTITLED to whatever it is they want and who are willing to take revenge on anyone who stands in their way or who prevents them from having their way.

(145,558 posts)I was a Clinton delegate to the national convention and I met many sanders supporters with this mindset. It was nasty. I was there when the sanders delegates booed Congressman John Lewis. I was warned about this stunt 20 to 30 minutes before it happened by the Clinton campaign whip. According to my whip, sanders was asked to stop this event and declined.
I was at the Texas delegation breakfast when a group of sanders delegates marched in and demanded that we condemn Clinton and change our votes to sanders.
sanders spoke to the Texas delegation the next morning and his speech was again solely about himself. There was a mini-riot due to his delegates the prior morning and the only thing that sanders talked about was himself. sanders did nothing to deal with the fact that his delegates were out of control and did nothing to try to help Hillary Clinton win the general election.
Finally a group of sanders delegates yelled at my daughter and called her the c-Word because she would not try to get me to change my vote. Again sanders was asked to tell his delegates to behave during the convention and sanders refused
I am not surprised by the fact that BOB types are objecting to supporting the nominee of the party.
I will support the nominee of the party no matter who it is. We must defeat trump
