https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Executive_Order_13535Executive Order 13535 is an executive order announced by President Barack Obama on March 21, 2010, and signed on March 24. It reinforces a commitment to preservation of the Hyde Amendment's policy restricting federal funds for abortion within the context of recent health care legislation. The order was signed after an agreement with pro-life Democratic Congressman Bart Stupak, who had said he and several other pro-life Democrats in the House of Representatives would not support the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act unless the Bill's language prohibiting federal funding of abortions was strengthened.

As for me, I think it was what had to be done to get the votes. You don't refuse 80% of what you want, to wait for perfection.
But now, I'm not sure it's necessary to support it, since no votes are needed to pass a health care reform bill. Still, it's possible that some pro-lifers go along with abortion, as long as their tax dollars don't have to pay for it. Maybe there are enough numbers there to make a difference in possible votes for Biden? I don't know. I wouldn't think so, but I don't know.

(22,355 posts)organizers spoke out against the order then, and they're speaking out against Biden's stance now. There's no excuse for this kind of oppression. The bodies of marginalized people have been held as a false compromise for too long.

A worthy trade. Especially given the fact most Americans are opposed to federal funding through Medicaid and Medicare for abortions.

"Washington (CNN) Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, along with 19 other Democratic senators, penned a letter Wednesday in support of Vice President Joe Biden's effort to maintain government subsidies for Planned Parenthood in the final budget negotiations for the 2011 funding bill.
The group said a Republican-led proposal to de-fund the organization would harm the economy.
"This ideological agenda cloaked in a budget document isn't even good fiscal policy....As a matter of creating jobs and bolstering the economy, this rider would have the opposite effect: not only will health centers be forced to close but many uninsured women and their families also may go without care, become more ill, and be kept away from their jobs," the senators wrote."
