Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumI am okay with Joe Biden's position on the Hyde Amendment......
Why? Because if Joe gets the nomination, it will be the strategy of Republicans backing Trump to use this as a means to suppress Women and most Democrats from voting as they use this as a wedge issue to rile up their base.
Republicans are great as misconstruing the facts into propaganda in order to win. Hammer on.."Democrats favor Government paying for Abortions" and all hell will break loose. Democrats loose in the House, Senate, White House.
Instead, let us all make annual and generous donations to Planned Parenthood to help women gain access to affordable Birth Control and pay for abortions should they so choose.

(16,387 posts)Some have posted polls refuting this but they all use flowery language to describe what amounts to tax dollars being used to pay for abortions. Polls using terms like reproductive services that could mean anything.
The republicans will lay it out just as you said. Tax dollars for abortions.

(3,696 posts)There will be a lot of noise coming from Dems who support other candidates though. I personally agree with Biden's position. Besides we should not give the GOP the Tax dollars for abortions hammer to beat Dems over the head with. This is not a hill we should be willing to die on. We also need to accept there are Dems in Red states and districts who will take Biden's position.

We defend PP by stating that no tax $$ goes for abortions. While I dont support the Hyde Amendment, I think moving the pro-choice window to the left is a mistake right now. The other side is already batshit nuts, lets not inflame them.

(3,212 posts)This is what I call just smart politics. We need to appeal to a broad swath of the country. Center left is the way right now. Then we nudge a little left, if the country supports it, over the next few.

(12,165 posts)If its what Biden believes, at least he told us. I know he said something different at the ACLU event, but Im taking the statement from his campaign to be the definitive position.
Its not a deal breaker for me, though it seems like it sets the wrong tone for the time we are in.

(37,648 posts)Because the Republicans will use that as a wedge issue. Money for deadbeats!
He shouldn't support Medicaid expansion in the ACA. Money for deadbeats!
He shouldn't support a $15 min. wage. Wedge issue, wedge issue. Money for people who don't work as hard as we do!
He shouldn't support non-discrimination laws to include gays. Wedge issue.
He shouldn't support (insert any Democratic Party platform issue here)....it's a wedge issue with Republicans.

(24,294 posts)Visit some conservative websites. They refer to Roe v Wade as a democratic conspiracy to commit mass murder of babies, genocide and the Holocaust times ten. They project their racism by accusing us of wanting to murder every black baby in the country.

(37,648 posts)They are focusing more on abortion this election because health care is a losing issue for them, and they're not doing so well on illegal immigration (children in cages). Although illegal immigration will still be hawked a lot (they've already trotted out the amnesty word).
I don't think it's wise to base a belief on whether a Republican will attack you for it. Of COURSE they'll attack. That's what they do best, since they don't have solutions.

A few weeks ago, Joe Biden told our #RightsforAll volunteer Nina in South Carolina that as president, he would end the Hyde amendment, which blocks access to abortion for low income women who cant pay out of pocket.
But his campaign has now told NBC he still supports Hyde.

(37,648 posts)So, are we all clear on where he stands on that?
I don't think a President has all that much control over what's in the bills that are sent to his desk, anyway. If it's a close call, a President can convince some Senators to not add this or that, but when it comes to abortion, I think a President will find that Senators & reps have very strong feelings on it.
