Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumNew CNN/Des Moines Register/Mediacom Poll. Top tier is tightening.
Overall, 24% say they favor the former vice president, with 16% backing Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, 15% Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and 14% South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg. California Sen. Kamala Harris rounds out the five over 5% with 7% support.
Biden has regularly been above 30% in national polling since announcing his candidacy in April, with his nearest competitor trailing by double-digits. But there hasn't been high-quality polling in Iowa since his entry to the race.
Beyond Biden's lower overall support, the poll also suggests some warning signs for him beneath those numbers. His supporters are less apt than others to say they are "extremely enthusiastic" about him (29% vs. 39% for backers of all other candidates, and 43% among those backing his nearest competition in Sanders, Warren or Buttigieg). He also remains the best-known candidate in the field, suggesting he has less room to grow than other candidates who Iowa's Democratic caucusgoers are still getting to know.

(24,122 posts)the numbers don't lie. Biden had a bad week in the news and the polls are now starting to reflect his downward slide... though modest, it's still noticeable.

(2,208 posts)Congrats to you and your candidate! Sanders 16% led all progressives and gave a hefty contribution to the great progressive showing in Iowa!
Progressives 45, Biden 24 !
This shows the appeal of progressive candidates speaking out for progressive issues in Iowa!
This is a strong indication that the majority of the delegates will be going to progressive candidates, not Joe.
Nice job!

(2,208 posts)Congratulations to you and your candidates!
The showing by the progressives in this poll is impressive.
Some people want to just compare Biden 24 to Sanders 16 but don't realize its not a two person race yet.
All told progressives got 45% to Joe Biden's 24%, that means the majority of delegates would be going to progressives, not Joe.
And the trend line is heading in the right direction, big time!

(49,004 posts)Biden's as far ahead of that second tier as the second tier is ahead of Harris and everyone with less support.
Buttigieg IS doing well there.

(22,877 posts)We had seen him take off locally.. but not sure what it was going to look like state wide.. and what we are seeing locally is playing state wide.. Warren looks good.. Buttigieg is looking very good.. Sanders is good.. Harris is back a ways.. and everyone else is in the tank.. very exciting..

(11,145 posts)It would be an old poll before Biden was even in the race so rally a moot point at this stage. I did see several other polls in April and they all showed him with much larger than 2 point leads.

(92,219 posts)it is not particularly Democratic with people knowing how other people are voting
Any states preferences are representative for that state. Extrapolating them to the rest of the country is not valid
Views of people in Iowa are not necessarily reprentative of the rest of the country

(92,219 posts)That was my point, and the fact it is a Caucus, it does nothing t necessarily represent the plurality of Iowans, since it is discriminatory against those who cant be there in person

It's progressives 45, Biden 24.
In the long run, when the field narrows to 3-4 candidates, it means progressives will be getting the majority of the delegates.

He only has an outside shot at VP or perhaps a Cabinet post to be honest.
It's becoming clear the Elizabeth Warren is going to be our nominee, but it's too soon to bail on Cory.
He want's to stay in the top tier of debates to get a national audience for his issues like mass incarceration of minorities, the plight of the urban poor and the failed so-called war on drugs that has led to the mass incarceration of minorities and the resultant voter suppression of minority communities.
In any case, we'll all be on the same side in 2020, right? If Warren gets the nomination, Biden supporters won't be dead-enders and hold that against her.
Cheers!

(772 posts)Former Vice President Joe Biden is leading the crowded Democratic presidential field in Iowa, with Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders in a tight secondary grouping alongside South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg in the third poll of the first-in-the-nation presidential nominating state.
The new Des Moines Register/CNN/Mediacom survey of likely Iowa caucusgoers released Saturday shows that although Biden's support registered at 24 percent a fall of 3 percentage points from the last poll he has stretched his lead to 8 percentage points over Sanders, from 2 percentage points in March.
Sanders and Warren registered at 16 percent and 15 percent respectively, with Sanders' support decreasing by 9 percentage points. Sanders narrowly lost the 2016 Iowa caucuses to Hillary Clinton.
Buttigieg made a strong debut at 14 percent, or 1 percentage point behind Warren. Sen. Kamala Harris remains steady at 7 percent compared with the last Iowa poll. Former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke dropped 3 percent and is now at 2 percent. Sen. Amy Klobuchar registered at 2 percent, with Sen. Cory Booker at just 1 percent.
