As Democratic Candidates Gather in Iowa, Sanders Marches Alongside McDonald's Workers to Demand $15

Minimum Wage

Rallying McDonald's workers in the same way he worked alongside Disney and Amazon employees in their fight for fair wages and union representation, Sen. Bernie Sanders marched alongside workers at a rally Sunday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The 2020 Democratic presidential candidate addressed workers outside a local McDonald's store before marching with them to the DoubleTree hotel and convention center where 19 primary candidates were gathered for the Iowa Democratic Party Hall of Fame Celebration.

Sanders highlighted the past successes he has helped workers achieve, working alongside the national grassroots group Fight for $15. Together, Sanders and the organization recently helped pressure Amazon and Disneyland to guarantee their employees a $15 minimum wage and the right to form a union.

"I want you to understand the enormous progress that you have made in the last few years," Sanders told the crowd. "Five years ago when we talked about $15 an hour and a union, people said it was an impossible dream. But because of the determination of workers at McDonald's and all over this country in the trade union movement, seven states in this country have passed a $15 minimum wage."

Working in the fast food industry is hellish.

No fixed schedules, understaffing, no guaranteed hours are the rule.

People deserve a living wage.

Thank you for fighting for the little guys, Senator Sanders!

"some other candidates are owned by corporate donors and Wall Street."

Which ones?

I don't suppose you have anything to back that up either.

And which other Democratic candidates don't support unions, a living wage or universal health care?

How does the Intercept prove any candidates are "owned by wall street" as you put it?

It appears you simply searched the Intercept for the title of an article that smears Democrats for being "corporate owned" but didn't bother to read the content, in which you sfind the entire premise of the article title is based on the answer to this question, which of course, anyone who is looking to smear Democratic candidates will eagerly answer themselves.

Since Carney is not personally registered, does his donation count as lobbyist money?

I think you might find more kindred spirits elsewhere on the internet...

Especially ones that eat up this kind of talk about candidates:

Other lobbyists who gave to Harris fall into the gray area of unregistered influence peddlers.

No wonder you only use a link, instead of actually posting the content...

The story misrepresents the donations of individual donors who are employed by a corporation as being "corporate donations." You clearly have a beef with Democrats if In These Times and The Intercept are your go-to sources of information on Democratic candidates.

In These Times examined the April 15 FEC filings of the leading Democratic candidates—Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, Beto O'Rourke, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren—and analyzed the donations they received from employees of the six largest U.S. banks (J.P. Morgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley) and the world's six largest private equity firms (The Carlyle Group, Blackstone, KKR, Apollo Global Management, CVC Capital Partners and Warburg Pincus).

That's a common smear of a candidate to equate the individual donations of employees of a company with "corporate PAC" donations and "Wall Street Money." I'm surprised you decided to perpetuate that sort of thing here on DU against Democratic candidates.

And you're still evading actually naming any other Democratic candidates (DNC Elites as you refer to them) who "don't support" a living wage, universal health care, or unions.

No surprise.

primary today, I would vote for:

Anyone who doesn't think corporate lobbying and donations have corrupted politics (and yes that includes our own party) is fucking naive, quite frankly. The idea that anyone with a D beside their name must be automatically as pure as the driven snow is so stupid that it deserves to be openly mocked at every opportunity.

And if this place ever prevents people from saying that, then it won't be a place I have any interest in wasting time at. It's supposed to be a political discussion site, not a site for teen cheerleaders.

You're defending Evolve's claim that there are Democratic Candidates who are "owned by big donors and wall street" even after they fail to provide evidence of such?

Attacking a straw man by equating anyone who says our candidates are not "owned by wall street" with saying all Democrats are "as pure as the driven snow," sounds like you are already giving up on DU. Divisive, anyway.
