Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders on Sunday defended his past votes for legislation containing a provision prohibiting federal funding for most abortions, while reiterating his support for abortion rights.
Sanders was asked on CNNs State of the Union about his support for bills containing the Hyde Amendment, which bans using Medicaid funds for abortions unless the womans life is in danger or the pregnancy arises from rape or incest.
Well, look, sometimes in a large bill you have to vote for things you don't like, Sanders said. But I think my record as being literally 100 percent 'pro-choice' is absolutely correct.
He went on to emphasize his support for abortion rights.
"If you believe, as I do, that a woman's right to control her own body is a constitutional right, then that must apply to all women, including low-income women," Sanders said.

(11,569 posts)...was that his reasoning then? In 2005, I believe the PLCCA (the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act) was a stand alone bill.

(25,183 posts)Let's say that every auto manufacturer and every auto dealer were to be held responsible for any damages committed by a driver of a car that was sold or manufactured. You'd wipe out the auto industry in a matter of months, as lawsuits bankrupted every manufacturer and dealer of motor vehicles. I think that was the real attempt behind this law, and Bernie saw through that.

(11,569 posts)There's something missing in your argument. Other industries don't have that same liability protection and I haven't read of any of them being wiped out from liability litigation.

(25,183 posts)If you hit my car in an accident, could I sue the dealer you bought your car from, or its manufacturer? No, I couldn't, unless my lawyer could prove that there was a defect in your car caused by one or the other that made the accident likely or inevitable.
This legislation was about banning firearms of all kinds, including ones that are primarily meant for hunting or target shooting, without running into the 2nd Amendment head-on.

(7,522 posts)Otherwise no legislation would get passed. There is a lot of whataboutism going on because of Biden's support for the Hyde Amendent. Voting for a spending bill and being in favor of the Hyde Amendment until, what, five days ago, are not equal.
