He really could. And that used to be considered the main reason to pick a VP, to get a big electoral vote state you could not win otherwise.

Beto definitely can be an asset in 2020.

. . especially informal gatherings in Iowa and New Hampshire, etc., is a truly valuable service to the country. Especially for those of us who don't have a chance to see the candidates "up close and personal" ourselves.
Several that I've watched in earlier elections have been quite revealing about candidates' personality and character (and depth and breadth of knowledge, as, unlike town halls, etc., the questions aren't necessarily prescreened).
