Poll: Black voters favor Biden, consumed by pocketbook issues ahead of 2020

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/06/11/biden-black-economic-alliance-poll-2020-1359082

A new poll conducted for a black political group shows former Vice President Joe Biden continuing to hold a big enthusiasm advantage over his 2020 presidential rivals, while other Democrats have a chance to make inroads by focusing on the pocketbook issues of paramount importance to African American voters.

Seventy-six percent of African American Democrats who answered the survey said they are enthusiastic about Biden, while 16 percent said they had some reservations or felt uncomfortable with his candidacy. The next closest candidate, Sen. Bernie Sanders, drew enthusiastic views from 64 percent of black Democrats, but 28 percent said they had some level of discomfort with him.

Sens. Kamala Harris and Cory Booker, the most prominent black candidates running for president in 2020, generated enthusiastic responses from 53 percent and 43 percent of black Democrats, respectively.

The survey commissioned by the Black Economic Alliance comes ahead of the group’s forum in South Carolina this weekend, where it is seeking more information from presidential hopefuls about their plans to advance economic opportunities for African Americans.

The survey, which was conducted by two Democratic polling firms, Hart Research and Brossard Research, found a three-way split on the top issues on the minds of African American voters, with 77 percent of respondents each saying that affordable health care, college affordability and creating more jobs with benefits were “extremely important issues.”

And before any Biden critics try to bring up thee standard anti-poll-results argument that they must have under-sampled younger voters -- no.

25% of those polled were 18-29.

Another 28% were 30-44.

Biden is a great political asset

Since he first stood in the massive shadow of Barack Obama four years ago, Joe Biden has emerged to be a full partner and a great political asset for the president.

The unequal nature of their relationship at first was a function of Obama’s unique standing as a candidate, but as he has fallen to earth, Biden’s star has risen. He is becoming an excellent surrogate for the president, taking on some of the essential work of defending the administration and sticking in the shiv when necessary. Biden does the latter with real skill, most of the time. His attack this weekend on Mitt Romney and Republicans as being “a little out of touch” was masterful.

Biden, whose campaign I worked for in the 1980’s, is a remarkable political figure. His personal story is masterfully chronicled in the great Richard Ben Cramer book, “What It Takes.” Biden was elected to the Senate in 1972 at the age of 29, headed the Judiciary and Foreign Relations committees and ran for president twice.

But what animates him politically is his visceral connection to a middle-class, often ethnic population who, as the cliche goes, work hard and play by the rules. He comes from Scranton, Pa., and from an America where people sweep their stoops, know their neighbors, often serve their country, love their kids, but aren’t afraid to smack them. It is an America where the dream is still college, maybe a professional job, Sundays down on the shore and enough in the bank to retire. It is an America that is struggling, disappearing really, in many places in Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New York and Michigan.

It is also a voting population that started abandoning the Democratic Party in 1980 and has rarely come back. This shrinking group is still a crucial swing vote, and while they may not warm to the cerebral Obama or the mega-millionaire elitist Romney, they might just like Joey Biden.

full of smears against our Democratic candidate, Ned Lamont. Also his (Askew's) firm, Glover Park Group, was major lobbyists for the Saudi head-choppers, until they stopped after pressure due to the Khashoggi bone-saw murder.

Not exactly the most sterling of people to be looking to for their opinions.

"Akunna Cook, executive director of the Black Economic Alliance, said there’s a strong correlation between how well-known the Democratic presidential candidates are and how much enthusiasm they generate — part of the impetus for putting on this weekend’s forum in South Carolina.

People know Biden, Cook said — “Obviously, he’s a former vice president, he’s polling very high. [Pete] Buttigieg is the lowest, but he’s also the least familiar of these candidates"

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
