(35,454 posts)yet the majority has never had a pres of their gender...oh wait, we probably did have one but she got cheated out of what was rightfully hers...typical!

(37,648 posts)Although I don't think gays are a protected class.
But you know what I mean. The ones who have been left out of the political process for years because of what they are: race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation.

(35,454 posts)Though I am still holding out for one of the 2 slots. Women are due IMHO.

(37,648 posts)we're about the only First World nation who hasn't elected a female to the top or second spot. But wanting to elect A woman or THIS woman does not equate to ANY woman. I wouldn't vote for someone because of gender. I'd take it into account. I don't see Harris as THE woman.
I remember Ferraro running on the ticket, and how most in the country (left and right) looked at her, not in a bad way, but as the oddity she was. Like she was some freak in a circus side show....a WOMAN on the ticket? Hey, look...she moves & talks like a male person! She's not trying to vacuum and dust everything on the stage!
I also liked that Hillary, and now Harris, wear PANTS! I'm old enough to remember female lawyers being kicked out of courts because the Judge wouldn't allow women to wear pants in his court. (We're talking Hillary & Harris nice business pants suits.)

(18,402 posts)Hes the sharpest of the bunch, for sure. It might not catch on with the wider public, but for now, hes running for President. Dont lets get ahead of ourselves. Besides, VP is not the best job: these days, often the road to oblivion. He might not want it.

(33,643 posts)I don't think, sadly, an openly gay man can win POTUS in the USA ... YET. But I think one could win VP. And if anyone COULD (AND be an overall benefit of to the ticket), it's Mayor Pete.

I'll be honest though, for my own part, I probably won't do much 'working' until our Democratic nominee is picked. But I sure will not work AGAINST Pete during that process of picking the nominee. And depending on who remains when I vote in the primary, I could easily see voting for Pete.

But after the debates I'm feeling extremely good about most of the line-up (Williamson seems... nice.) and I'll be STRONGLY and sincerely behind anyone who wins our nomination.

(3,115 posts)Barack took America out of the doldrums when Shrub and Darth Cheney were the miserable faces of the country. Now that we have an even bigger worthless (and dangerous!) piece of shit in the White House, maybe it's time to really rock their world with a representative of what's really going on. Not ancient, straight white fuckers. Women. LGBT. People of color. The future.

(37,648 posts)America has never elected a Democratic President, after an 8 yr run by a Democratic President, since maybe FDR-Truman (and that was because Truman had succeeded to the Presidency upon FDR's death, so Truman was an incumbent).
However, it would behoove Biden not to run for re-election in 2024, leaving it open for Buttigieg. If Biden gets the nomination.
That's the only way that Buttigieg should take that gig. Unless he thinks that Biden looks unhealthy ( ). Just joking. Biden's family has a long lifespan, I think (unless they get cancer).

(91 posts)Mayor Pete for president with any Dem vice?
This guy is in the top tier already, only a month or two since he was an unknown and there are still many months to go. Don't let yourself fall for the B.S. from whoever is trying to him sell him short.

(6,139 posts)Hell be of value to most anyone at the top of the ticket helping to carry industrial midwest and mobilizing military folks to vote. Even if Biden wins the nomination, Pete has a lot to offer. I know it is tempting to prefer a woman in either role but the most important is to win. Even so, as an openly gay person, Pete would still be the first and minority. (arguably lgbt rights are still more restricted than women rights).
The most overlooked quality of Mayor Pete is his appeal to religious left and how he is able to effectively expose religious right as evil.

(37,648 posts)He's made to order for the office of the President. I don't think America could do any better.
Level headed, articulate, calm, blowout smart without being arrogant about it, quick thinker, a great deal of knowledge about the issues, seems to be wise beyond his years, a quiet charisma.

(43,869 posts)Naturally, he's popular with LGBTs. But I know several (former) Republican christians whose children are gay. THEY are really backing Mayor Pete with a passion.

(91 posts)It might be a mistake to try to pigeonhole Buttigieg based on his sexual orientation (personally I'm hoping we can get back to leaving the president's sex life out of our daily conversations, it's been a little puke-inducing lately).
He's already gained a huge following outside of the LGBTQ community and it just keeps building. If what's happening in real time is any indication, the fact that Pete is gay just doesn't seem to be making any difference.

(43,869 posts)They were Republicans. They attended churches that astrocized gay people. But their children grew up to be gay. And they chose their children over their church and party.
He's an inspriration to them. It makes a difference to them. Nothing wrong with that.
No one said ANYTHING about pigeonholing Buttigieg.

(91 posts)I read your post completely wrong, and I sincerely apologize for that.
It IS good news that there are more and more folks choosing love and decency above all else!
In my DU 'profile' I wrote simply that I've joined DU in the search for hope that goodness does still exist in modern day America and it's exactly inspiring stories like the one you shared (and I completely misunderstood) that I'm looking for to renew my faith in this society.
So, Thank You!

(91 posts)First of all, again, I apologise for misinterpreting your post.
I live and work everyday in an extremely right-wing community and I see now that I reacted to your post with a defensive instinct that has become ingrained in me from day-to-day exposure to some very malicious and ignorant mindsets.
I mistook your post as saying that Buttigieg's following was made of only the "interesting" LGBTQ community.
It's scary to me to recognize how much being saturated by right-wing ideology every day is warping my perceptions, making me paranoid and defensive, and just plain screwing everything up.
I'm feeling very glad right now that I've found DU.

(149,698 posts)And a hearty Welcome to DU! I am one of the hosts of the Buttigieg 2020 Group, and I hope you'll come by to say hello.
It must be very hard to live and work in an extremely right-wing community! Kudos to you for being able to do it. Here on DU, you will find us very friendly and welcoming. I've been here since 2005 and this place is home for me (electronically speaking!). I hope you will find it good for you as well.
Again, Welcome!

(91 posts)Wow, it must seem silly but I'm seriously grateful for all the good vibes here.
Seems I'm going have to get used to basic-respect-among-folks-as-the-norm again. I'm so conditioned to having to delicately fend off some rally crazy hate-for-the-sake-of-hate and all kinds of other nutthink in just about every conversation.
Very glad to be here. Going to go give myself a gold star for finding you guys.

(149,698 posts)If you want a real gold star, DU gives them to folks who cough up a few dollars every year. The amount is up to you.
It will give you freedom from the ads and other good perks.
You'll see one right next to my name.
And, no, you are not silly. We can connect pretty easily via the internet. I have a number of good friends whom I have not met in person. It really works!

(497 posts)He is by far the most intelligent person out of the 23 candidates running. He is a Harvard graduate, an Oxford scholar, speaks 7 languages, a concert pianist and he speaks to the people in a way that he is easily understood. He has excellent policies and it would be a travesty of justice if he wasn't selected as the democratic candidate.

(19,240 posts)Like Geraldine Ferraro. "Hey, maybe we can increase a certain demographics turn out by throwing them a bone?" Remember, VP is not really a job. It is just a stepping stone to a job as in "The party would consider someone like you in 8 years." Why not consider someone like him now?

(1,898 posts)The choice for running mate has two top priorities:
1) To help the nominee lock in a state. Mayor Pete definitely could help with that. Obama won the Hoosier State in 2008 but lost it in 2012.
2) To bolster the nominee's foreign policy bona fides. In the case of Biden, there would be no such need. In the case of most any other potential nominee, such a need would exist. As a Rhodes Scholar with amply experience in military intelligence, Mayor Pete could be a big help.
If Mayor Pete neither were the nominee nor running mate, after this cycle, I suspect that he could run for Indiana AG again and whoop the Republican.
