College students who support Sen. Bernie Sanders and will be voting for the first time in 2020 say the senator's age is not an issue to them.
Sanders, 77, has faced questions as to whether he's too old to run for president since the senator announced he's running again.
Young supporters of Sen. Sanders say they're not concerned about his age as he makes another run for president.
At Sanders' rally in Iowa City, IA, on Friday night, students from the University of Iowa could be overheard talking about how the senator has "always" had the same values.
One such student, Sam Johnston of Forsyth, Illinois, told INSIDER he supports Sanders because he's "fair," "reliable," and he trusts the senator to "follow through" on his campaign promises.
Johnston, 18, who will be a first-time voter in 2020, said "age range doesn't matter" when it comes to Sanders because he "just knows our values and shares them."
When asked if they would support the ultimate Democratic nominee even if it's not Sanders, the trio hesitated to respond.
Johnston, appearing deep in thought, said "most likely, yes" but added that there's "so many" candidates to choose from and it's early. If it came down to it, Johnston said his second choice would would be Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

(21,684 posts)I voted for him in the 2016 primaries, and while I have my doubts as to his electability this time around his charisma - especially among younger voters - is undeniable.
But if he's the nominee, seeing seeing bona fide New Yorkers with big personalities go at it in the next debates would be, well...

(21,684 posts)I think they'd find, to their surprise, that in the long run they too would be better off with some common sense reforms.

(42,862 posts)Everyone should play by the same rules. No special favors for anyone! No exceptions.
The American people have the right to know whether or not anyone running to be the "Leader of the Free World" has properly paid his taxes. We have the right for an honest, forthcoming, and COMPLETE release of his FULL tax returns for a period of TEN years so that we can confirm where the candidate's money is coming from, and where the candidate is investing or saving (ie: domestic or off-shore) and what the candidate and his/her spouse claims as "deductibles" or other assets.
We need to see EVERY candidate's tax returns BEFORE the primaries... so that we'll know whether or not he or she is honest and has the integrity to be our party's nominee.
It's complete BS for any candidate to think they're entitled to DELAY and not release their tax returns until they win the nomination. All I'm saying is that the American voters deserve better than the peek-a-boo and hide-and-seek delays and excuses.

(42,862 posts)Fact is: THE TAX RETURNS ARE READY AND COMPLETE. We know this because he already submitted them to the IRS.
It can't be emphasized enough that if the tax returns are good enough for the IRS, then they're good enough for the American voters to see.
It has nothing to do with the returns still needing more work... they are complete, and they are being withheld.
The big question now is: WHY?
It certainly does make people suspicious. It certainly does look fishy.
All I'm saying is... what compelling reason would he have for withholding them? Is someone making calculated decision and weighing a which-would-be-worse scenario?
Has someone decided that the damage caused by NOT releasing them is preferable to ACTUALLY releasing them?
If so, that's a matter that deserves close examination and consideration because it presents many issues and problems going forward.

Here's to the day our lawmakers' personal lives mean nothing to most voters.
We're not there yet - and we've got the media and many of our pastors to thank for that.
Which, of course, is ironic in itself.

(1,851 posts)I was a 2016 Bernie volunteer and talked to thousands of people. Bernie brings in young, old and in between, but even more importantly he attracts Republicans, Independents and people who never voted before.
One of the people I talked to was a 30-year-old Iraq veteran who had never voted. He not only supported Bernie and registered to vote for him, but was also eager to work for him. He said, Tell me where to be, and I am ready to work. He was representative of many I spoke with.
I also wore my Bernie shirt to Costco right after Clinton took the primary. Three people - two older women and a middle-aged man came up to commiserate with me that Bernie would not be the candidate. I get so angry with the MSM meme that Bernie only attracts kids. I know better, and this senior citizen will be working my tail off to get him elected this time. I am convinced that he would have then and still can beat that creature now inhabiting the Oval Office. As for his age, there are plenty of good, younger, capable VP possibilities to ease that fear.

(21,684 posts)Yes, Bernie's behind in most polls among older voters - but nearly so much as to cancel out his overwhelming advantage among those under 40.
As senior citizens in particular realize that Bernie - and Liz Warren's - policies are of particular benefit to them, more will come on board.
