Sanders, Warren Knock Steyer on His Way into the Democratic Primary: Tired of Billionaires Trying to ‘Buy Political Power’

By Josh Feldman Jul 9th, 2019, 4:05 pm

Billionaire activist and Trump impeachment advocate Tom Steyer is getting into the Democratic primary race for some reason, and two of the top candidates in the race took shots at him as he kicked off his campaign.

Without mentioning him by name, Elizabeth Warren not-so-subtly tweeted, “The Democratic primary should not be decided by billionaires, whether they’re funding Super PACs or funding themselves. The strongest Democratic nominee in the general will have a coalition that’s powered by a grassroots movement.”

Bernie Sanders was a little more direct after Andrea Mitchell asked him on MSNBC today about Steyer jumping in. He said he likes Steyer personally but added, “I am a bit tired of seeing billionaires trying to buy political power… I’m not a great fan of billionaires getting involved in the political process.”

Sanders and Warren are not the only candidate so far to swipe at Steyer’s entry into the race:

Last I heard, the Democratic Primaries are decided by the voters. George II Jul 2019 #1
I assumed that he's running because as a candidate he will get air time to say what he's been saying renate Jul 2019 #2

His impeachment message won't be a commercial, it will be speeches/tweets/interviews from a candidate and therefore worth to be covered as legitimate news. I think that's great.

If he's another Starbucks-type billionaire who might gum up the race, I'll be mad. But nothing so far has led me to believe his opposition to Trump is a vanity project for him so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm certain that he would/will drop out and give his full support to the eventual Democratic nominee.

primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

I'm tired of people thinking they should be president just because they have a lot of money and feel entitled to leapfrog over other, more qualified people who have much more to offer but don't have a billion dollars to buy their way in to the top tier.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
