Report: John Delaney's staff staged a 2020 intervention

https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2019/07/john-delaney-2020-race

Axios reports that Delaney’s senior staff “sat him down” on July 9 and told him to drop out of the race by mid-August. They did so because, despite running for 721 days, spending nearly $19 million (including $11 million of his own), and visiting all of Iowa’s 99 counties, the majority of Americans hear the name “John Delaney” and think “who?” (The businessman has not polled above 1% since the beginning of 2017, and often polls at zero.) According to people familiar with the matter, staffers who have left the campaign were concerned about how much of Delaney’s own money he was blowing on the charade, telling Axios, “a lot of people who did leave thought, ‘You gotta eat. You need a paycheck.’ So that was a big part of it.”

(snip)

In a statement, Delaney’s campaign told Axios: “Alexi McCammond’s report on our campaign this morning is incorrect. No one on my team asked me to drop out of the race and I have no plans to drop out of the race.”

If a supporter of Seth Moulton thinks your campaign is on life support, it might be time to consider a different path.

Once Democrats find out Delaney is opposed to single payer and free college his numbers should rise.

moderate liberal Democrat. (Btw, there is no political orientation of "moderate." People average out either either moderate liberals or moderate conservatives, though a few may be moderate libertarians.) Delaney's moderate liberal.

His dad was an electrician, he went to college on earned scholarships, and his net worth was recently estimated at over $92M, so he's neither incompetent nor crazy and can afford to invest in his political career. He didn't run for reelection to congress in order to run for president, so perhaps he just hopes to leave on better terms to set himself up for what he wants to do next.

"In 2000, Delaney co-founded CapitalSource, a commercial lender ... provided capital to roughly 5,000 small and mid-size businesses before his departure.

In 2010, during Delaney's tenure as CEO, CapitalSource was awarded a Bank Enterprise Award from the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund by the U.S. Treasury Department for its investment in low-income and economically distressed communities.

In 2005, CapitalSource was named one of Washingtonian Magazine's best places to work for its company culture and employee benefits."

He's also a former healthcare financier and knows incredibly more about that subject than the mindless kneejerkers who shamefully booed him for trying to explain his views about what will work. Their loss since they came out as foolish and ignorant as they went in, but they gave him almost his only press attention.

I don't feel a need for his presence in the race, especially if he's going to criticize our frontrunners, but there are several genuinely unworthy candidates whose names I'd much rather have seen.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

9. This is a good post -- interesting, informed, balanced. A rarity on political message boards.

I only barely know who John Delaney is, but I don't get some of the criticism he gets for daring to run. Given his background -- which is comparable to some of the leading candidates -- I would think that Delaney has something to contribute to the debate, even if he's most likely to lose.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
