It's unclear to me how any candidate's campaign can benefit by portraying themselves as a victim. No matter who he or she may be, no matter how high or low their polling numbers are... this type of response always suggests weakness. Every time I've seen it in the past, it was an indicator of a campaign that was struggling, or in trouble, or outright dying and withering on the vine. While some may argue that it's a good example of a campaign that's "adapting"... what it tells me is that it's a campaign that has difficulty in getting a foothold.

It's not a good "look" for a campaign that needs to unskew the polls, or to "unskew mainstream news outlets" by creating their own "news" outlet. When "interviews" become infomercials, it loses all value to the voter who takes seriously the solemn obligation of voting for the best candidate to be our party's nominee.

But, getting back to campaigns that embrace the "victim" label... that's not something that inspires confidence from me. If a campaign is so befuddled by an adversarial and "hostile" media because they ask tough questions (or because they don't believe that repetitive "fluff" is newsworthy,) then what kind of leader should I expect him (or her) to be if they are fortunate enough to be the party's nominee?

These are valid questions and discerning voters should consider things like this carefully.

primary today, I would vote for:

That particular approach is a myopic one that is self-defeating in the long run. Not only is it bad-optics for those who are paying attention, but it fails to accomplish the goal of "reaching more voters". Therefore it's a double-fail.

Campaigns that make these types of mistakes are unprepared. If they're unprepared for "hostile" or adversarial media and reporters who ask difficult questions (or who are discerning in what they deem to be newsworthy)... then I would have very little confidence that they would be prepared for dealing with hostile adversaries around the world.

This looks to me to be a sign of a dying campaign with a staff that's out of fresh ideas and realistic solutions. It's difficult to watch sometimes.

Messaging is one thing; manipulation is another thing altogether.

Let's hope there are no chirpy "commercials", staged "game shows", and weird, pre-scripted "interviews".

We need real news.
