The state commissioner of political practices has rejected a complaint filed by Republicans against Montana Gov. Steve Bullock that claimed the governor used state resources during travel on his campaign for president.
In July, the Montana Republican State Central Committee lodged a complaint with the Commissioner Jeff Mangan alleging Bullock violated the code of ethics for traveling out of state with his executive protection detail while campaigning for the Democratic nomination for president.
Bullock, a Democrat, is seeking his party's nomination to be president in 2020. As part of that bid, he has been traveling across the country, with a focus on the state of Iowa, which holds the first-in-the-nation Democratic presidential caucus in 2020. Before announcing his candidacy, Bullock also made several trips to Iowa and other states while testing the waters and in support of local Democratic candidates.
After the complaint was filed, Bullock moved to dismiss it, saying the executive protection detail makes its own decisions about when its officers are used. He also said that a memorandum of understanding about the detail says the governor must have the security detail "regardless of his physical location or the nature of his activities
including
during times that he is engaged in political activities."
