It's funny. I have this "feeling" about Warren...

It came over me late this morning. I am watching some coverage of her speaking to a group of people and I thought to myself "she's gonna do this. She'll win and be our first female president."
She just seemed presidential, what I want a president to look like and sound like. Passionate, giving of herself, decent, honest.

I never ever had such prescient feeling for a winning candidate before, I confess. Of course, like so many Dems I just "knew" that HRC would win, as I went eagerly to my local polling place, back in 2016. Of course, I had the same feeling about John Kerry...

Here I go.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

99. Our first and only concern
Thu Aug 29, 2019, 02:12 PM
Aug 2019

Our first and only concern should be who can beat Trump. PERIOD. Sadly there is no way anyone except Biden can have the possibility of beating Trump.........Sadly, it isn't the best person can win, just who can truly get the votes. THERE IS NO WAY REPUBLICANS, INCLUDING REPUBLICAN WOMEN WILL VOTE FOR A WOMAN PRESIDENT. Truthfully there isn't a single woman or man in recent history who could match Hillary's knowledge or abilities and look what happened to her........

So, how about Biden and Warren as VP candidate.........

I have to say, ever since I could vote It has mostly been the lesser of two evils that would get my presidential vote.
It is my generation that couldn't vote until age 21. We fought for the right to vote at 18 and won based purely on the logic if we could go to Vietnam and kill people, we were old enough to vote.......

This election will decide the entire future of American FOREVER and we need to go for broke. Dem's need to decide on who to go with and begin a year of focused work to get them elected by doing everything to accomplish that goal......PERIOD

Also, the Dems need to more importantly focus on Senate races maybe even more than Trump......The Republican controlled Senate is, in reality, the ONLY reason that Trump is allowed to remain as President........PERIOD

107. Our first and only concern...
Sat Aug 31, 2019, 12:31 PM
Aug 2019

I agree the most important concern for this country is to defeat Trump. But after what we've seen from Biden in the debates and on the trail, I am not seeing a man who has what it will take to beat Trump.

Biden has already basically said that he won't pick Warren as VP. He wants someone who agrees with him on the issues and isn't considering diversity as his first consideration. I think this is both politically foolish and tone deaf.

Let's tackle a few of your points:

Point: "THERE IS NO WAY REPUBLICANS, INCLUDING REPUBLICAN WOMEN WILL VOTE FOR A WOMAN PRESIDENT."

Counterpoint: You are generally correct. There is also no way they will vote for Biden, and we don't need their votes to take the Presidency. Republicans are less than 30% of the electorate according to Gallup. 90% of them will vote for Trump anyway, and the Never Trumpers like Comey will vote for whoever the Dems run or for a Libertarian candidate. The numbers say we don't need them to win. We need most of the independents who represent the largest group in the election, and we need to EXCITE and TURN OUT the Democratic base. There may be an argument that Biden would do better with Independents, but there is no question that Warren has the enthusiasm edge required to drive voter turnout. Warren's track record also shows that the more people see and hear her, the more they like her. Biden's track record in Presidential elections shows the opposite.

Point: Also, the Dems need to more importantly focus on Senate races maybe even more than Trump......The Republican controlled Senate is, in reality, the ONLY reason that Trump is allowed to remain as President........PERIOD

Counterpoint: I agree, this is a very close second in importance to beating Trump. This is why the men who are in this race need to get out and run for open Senate seats. Some are already doing so, and this is a GOOD thing.

Point: Truthfully there isn't a single woman or man in recent history who could match Hillary's knowledge or abilities and look what happened to her........

Counterpoint: Hillary Clinton was the most hated politician in America before Trump, and she almost won. Elizabeth Warren shows a stronger work ethic, more energy, more authenticity, is far more likeable, and has a far more inspiring message. In addition, Trump has moved a lot more people against him with his actions since 2016. As a white man who helped cause this problem by voting third party in 2016 (Trump and Clinton were both horribly flawed candidates but I had no idea Trump would be THIS bad or Congress would be THIS spineless), I can tell you I am fired up and passionate about electing the first female President. It's LONG past time.

The Democratic Party lost by playing it safe in 2016. Biden is the "safe" play here, and he's not even very safe. The idea of him on a debate stage with Trump scares me to death. The idea of Warren on a debate stage with Trump... I CANNOT WAIT to see her take him apart.

I am beginning to think, that if a Dem wins the election, the Repubs will find a way to invalidate the election and keep themselves illegally in power for ever more. Hell even if the Dem were allowed to take office, the Repub Senate would once again block everything.
Even if we had the house, the senate, and the presidency, can you just imagine how many decades it would take to undo all that has been done during the Bush Cheney Administration and the Trump Administration??????????? Not to speak of the ton of stuff that can never be undone........

Wed Aug 28, 2019, 06:08 PM
Aug 2019

They're meaningless.

This 2020 presidential election is going to be totally and utterly hyper partisan. Trump supporters are stoked and will vote for him in record numbers. The Democratic faithful will need to turn out en masse. Independents who lean Republican will need to be persuaded that DJT is such an asshole that an actual asshole would be better than him. Of course having someone with the charisma of Barack Obama, JFK or even Bill Clinton will help.

My problem with Elizabeth Warren is charisma and that I don't know her that well. (Need to find an event she's attending in the future). Policywise I'm okay but then most candidates are on some variant of free(er) health care and education for all and in any case the worst Democratic candidate is miles away better than the leading Republican frontrunner.

Wed Aug 28, 2019, 06:41 PM
Aug 2019

I've kinda gotten jaded over polls, going back to 1992 when the UK was to have a Labour government, only for the Tories to return... John Kerry was to have won Ohio but didn't, in the Brexit referendum the polls said remain the vote was to leave. Oh and 2016 we were supposed to have President Clinton but we got a horrible fart instead.

Polls are nice, yes we can analyze the data but what needs to happen is for the Democratic Party at all levels is to identify all those who will vote for the Democrats, and ensure that all that will do get to vote. Gerrymandering, vote suppression and other GOP nasty tactics can only be overcome with large numbers.

Also a lot of these headline polls are looking at things on a national basis and we all know Hillary won the most number of votes. We got to focus on the electoral college and figure out the battleground states. DJT won these by slim margins, so 2020 points more towards Get Out The Vote than anything else. Thus this is why we need a candidate that is worth going out to vote for.

If I were to vote in a presidential

which is as poorly done, mismanaged, deliberately falsified, and alsays reported through a particular lens (probably not yours) as political polls. They have never been completely accurate (remember "Dewey beats Truman"?) but they have never been so deliberately distorted as is being done today. If you don't want to ignore them, fine. Just be sure to find out who is doing the polling, and then take them with a pillar of salt, evven if the source is reputable. The polls should be noted, especially to see trends over the next several months.
But, it's much too early to get excited about them.
A lot can happen between now and the conventions that could change everything.

As far as charisma is concerned, I think Elizabeth Warren has a pretty good amount of charisma. This is obvious in the energy she is generating in the people who have heard her speak in person.
You can see it in the crowds she draws.

My son told be yesterday that he thinks Warren is the best candidate, but also thought Harris would be a good nominee. He also made it clear "anyone" but trump.

He is 25. I think a lot of the young voters want a woman to be the nominee this time.

...has the last name Trump or Kushner. Because that's what will be next - there will be an attempt at political dynasty here. Even if we win, we will have to fight this fight again... and again.

I'll never vote blue "no matter what." Supporting Democrats or Republicans blindly based on tribalism is what got us here. When you keep picking between the lesser of two evils, the lesser of two evils just keeps getting more evil (with occasional exceptions like Obama, who, let's face it, let us down in a lot of areas, relatively great though he was).

!!!!We NEED ranked choice voting to fix this in the longer term!!!

Let us not kid ourselves. The economy will be in recession. Trump is facing criminal prosecution. His only hope will be to start a war. He will absolutely do this. The Dem field has been rather thin on foreign policy at the moment because other issues are at the forefront. If it is Warren, she will need to ramp up her foreign policy and pick a VP with some heavy duty military foreign policy credentials. Or you could vote for Biden.

So, I don't know if past foreign policy experience is going to be the decider.

And Warren's experience with the financial system is also a key part of foreign policy - capital flows, regulation, and their effects across national borders. Don't underestimate the importance of that element of foreign policy.

Can't say that I am all good with the state of affairs that 45 previous male presidents have left us with when it comes to foreign relations.

Most of the time I felt both who could win and who wouldn't, When I've had the pit of the stomach dread that the Dem candidate wouldn't win, they lost. That includes Humphrey, McGovern, Carter's second term run, Mondale, Dukakis, Kerry and Hillary. I voted for all of them and worked for most but they lost. The nominees who I felt could could win were Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.

Now, I have the strong feeling that Warren can beat Trump IF she's nominated. More ominously, I have the deep down dread that Biden can't beat Trump, and I've been right about every one of those so far, so I'm inclined to take that feeling very seriously.

Warren ended up in Massachusetts; she’s not from there, nor does she come off like it. For instance:

LeeAnn Blankenship, a 38-year-old coach and supervisor at a home visitation company who grew up in Kermit and wore a sharp pink suit, said she may now support Warren in 2020 after voting for Trump in 2016.

“She’s a good ol’ country girl like anyone else,”she said of Warren, who grew up in Oklahoma. “She’s earned where she is, it wasn’t given to her. I respect that.”

My first choice. Agree, it helps mobilize the black vote we need fully mobilized in 2020. Although I also believe the more people see and hear Warren, especially black women, she will mobilize them too. She's proven that already at She the People: https://thegrio.com/2019/05/20/elizabeth-warren-connection-with-black-women-voters/

It's heavily East Coast is my only concern. Warren/Brown could help in the Midwest, so I think there's a good argument for that as well.

Warren/Harris might help with the black vote, but probably doesn't help us with the white vote away from the coasts which we have anyway.

Like you said, she is Presidential. The plus for her over Biden is very little baggage. Fair or not if you hang around Washington too long
you pick up baggage. But as a whole the final ten are all top notch and the polls show that my cat couuld beat Trump in a fair election. Bernie has not aged well with the voters and I can't see him being in the finals. I think both Harris and Warren will pick up some support as the other candidates drop out. The final ten are all great in their own way and have boosted my confidence of the party I belonged to for 50 years to rise above pettiness and head for the goal of making a better country for all. If they keep it going as they have you will see a lot more "retirements" from the disloyal opposition.I hope we have learned our lesson from 2010 and not give the dark side a chance to get organized but hit fast and hard after the inaugaration. It's going to take a whole lot to clean up the mess left behind and we need a strong leader to see that justice is done and fast.

just as we deserved Hillary (we know she won by nearly 3 million votes, yet the orange vomit is in office). Let's work together to make it happen for the Democrats.

Elizabeth Warren, popular vote winner - Elizabeth Warren, electoral college winner. Let's do it!

The time to make this happen is relatively short, much hard work needs to be done prior to November 2020. Get out the vote, get out the vote, get out the vote.

Democracy works best when voters vote. GOTV.

If she’s the nominee I could easily and enthusiastically support her. I’m moving toward that right now. Same thing for Joe Biden.

MY #1 was Jay Inslee, but he never caught fire. So I’m a boat without a harbor at the moment.

I AM ABSOLUTELY committed to vote for - AND work for whoever winds up carrying our colors into battle. Yes, even including Bernie, though he’s far from my favorite.

Glad Gillibrand bailed. But if she’d been the nominee, I’d have promoted and voted for her too.

That said, I think Warren has the charisma, the intelligence, the policy-smarts and that indefinable quality that could make her a great president. Because make no mistake - whoever we elect in 2020 is in for a real shit show with the economy, the environment, the deficit and national debt, repairing our standing in the world, and the lost faith of Americans in all the institutions we depend upon that Trump has systematically attacked.

That person, like Obama, will have to be very strong.

Now I've heard a lot of "election experts" project that a candidate could lose by SIX million votes and still lose the Electoral College. The Republicans would raise the roof and we'd never hear the end of it if it were their candidate. In fact if the voting in Bush Vs Gore had gone the other way, the EC would already be gone.

I did. Then again, Warren was already my first choice last time.

They need to accept the obvious fact that the DNC will never let Bernie win and align with the candidate who CAN win and shares most of the same policy agenda (albeit with a heck of a lot more intellectual rigor and ability to get it done). Sadly there are a few (and I mean a few, it's a small minority of Bernie supporters) who truly supported Bernie over Hillary only out of the misogyny they still can't see in themselves, but they aren't going to vote for Trump against all of their other values on that basis alone. They will come around.

Warren doesn't have the problem of not being a Democrat. This simple fact is why the DNC will accept her when they become convinced she's the strongest candidate. Some of them are coming around, and a lot more will after the debate on 9/12, when it becomes clear that this race is really coming down to Warren v Biden, and we've seen how Warren does in the debates compared to Biden. The choice is going to become very clear very quickly.

I think the process has been better this time around. There is no 'chosen one' as there seemed to be the last time. If Warren gets the nom, it will be because she earned it and she deserves it. She has the knowledge to do the job and fix our government post-Trump - and the determination to get it done.

how the evolution of women's and families' necessary choices have both been expanded and thwarted and the impact of previous admins' economic policies impacted so many of us, but she has answers and solutions that will help America form that more perfect union! She's an inspiration to women, a passional warrior of issues, and yet kind and gentle to those that need compassion and respite.

My only concern is if she can gain the respect of foreign leaders in discussions of sensitive issues, especially those in the Mideast. I hope she chooses a wise VP who is ready to work successfully on the projects and tasks she's outlined already, united to regain the trust of our allies and deal with those that show no signs of stopping harm to the world's communities by aggression and corruption.

Of course, I would defer to my party's choice of presidential candidate, but I sure hope Ms. Elizabeth Warren will be our choice.

114. Elizabeth Warren should have no problem with Middle Eastern leaders
Sun Sep 1, 2019, 11:02 PM
Sep 2019

After all, they are used to female heads of state 'round those parts. Benazir Bhutto was elected in Pakistan, and Indira Gandhi ran neighboring India for decades. Now, foreign policy is the folder on the Oval Office desk for which POTUS has overwhelming responsibility, and Pres. Warren will have to build up her world affairs chops hugely and quickly. So far, her plans for domestic policy are extremely heartening, and with them, she has earned my primary vote. But, as much as she might like the idea, she is not running for Senate Majority Leader (a gig in which she'd be especially spectacular). She is running for President, and that means that she will spend the lion's share of her time in office dealing with Russia, Iran, North Korea, NATO and other such tidy topics.

As far as that goes, she ain't Drumpf. Imagine the credit she'll enjoy and the outpouring of relief and encouragement she'll receive at the 2021 G7 summit, for instance. Our allies will be desperate to see her succeed as Leader of the Free World.

I'm with you. I wanted her to run in 2016, though I understand why she didn't. I was stuck with supporting Bernie because there was just far too much I disagreed with Clinton on.

The BIG difference is her favorables. Neither Clinton or Kerry had her work ethic or authenticity. She can and will win people in the general over. The contrast between her and Trump could not be more favorable.

I keep hearing from women of all ages that the country isn't ready for a female President. While I understand this after the disappointment last time but I think it's easily disprovable. Hillary was (and still is) one of the most hated politicians in recent political history. In spite of that, she won the popular vote and almost won the election. Warren is light years more likable than Clinton.

As a white man who wouldn't vote for Clinton, I can tell you I CANNOT WAIT to cast my ballot for Warren. I'm not alone. We can do this, and it's long past time for white men who want to be on the right side of history to put our money and our votes where our mouths are. Until we have more women leading this world, the world will continue to suffer from the consequences of toxic masculinity. I'm not about to let my daughter grow up in a world where I haven't done absolutely everything I can to help counteract it.

Regardless of all that, she is simply the strongest candidate and the best leader in the race.
