Tulsi Gabbard tells Fox News host Tucker Carlson that DNC debate criteria isn't transparent

Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard is among the many Democratic presidential candidates who did not qualify for September’s debate round by yesterday’s deadline.

Now, she says that the criteria for making the debate stage “lacks transparency.”

Gabbard told Fox News’ Tucker Carlson that “the whole thing gets a little bit confusing and you’ve got to jump way down into the weeds of the numbers and the statistics, but I think the bigger problem is that the whole process really lacks transparency.”

The Democratic National Committee sets rules for candidates in order to qualify for each debate. While the first two rounds saw 20 candidates each, split into two nights of 10, the Sept. 12 debate criteria resulted in a much narrower pool. The guidelines for the third debate were announced in May, and 10 candidates qualified.

Candidates needed to receive donations from at least 130,000 unique donors, coming from at least 20 different states with at least 400 donors per state. And, candidates needed to poll at 2% or higher in at least four qualifying national or early primary state surveys.

they're not being transparent.

I would say that, by going on Tucker's show to complain, she's being a bit transparent herself.

Here are the rules about qualifying polls:

A candidate must receive 2 percent support or more in four national or early state polls—Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and/or Nevada—publicly released between June 28, 2019, and August 28, 2019. Any candidate’s four qualifying polls must be conducted by different organizations, or if by the same organization, must be in different geographical areas. Qualifying polls are limited to the following organizations and institutions:

Associated Press
ABC News
CBS News
CNN
Des Moines Register
Fox News
Monmouth University
NBC News
New York Times
National Public Radio
Quinnipiac University
University of New Hampshire
Wall Street Journal
USA Today
Washington Post
Winthrop University

So the non-transparent part is how those polls were chosen. That is, why count NPR (B- rated) but not Emerson (B+ rated) or YouGov (B rated)? (Counting Emerson and YouGov would have given Gabbard the other two qualifying polls she needed.) I'm not saying the DNC is wrong to not count them, I'm just pointing out that the selection criteria is not transparent.

I'm a poll geek and check out all polling regardless of who does it or where it's from. I'd be hard pressed to find 1 poll with Tulsi polling 2% or higher let alone 26. Tulsi has strong GOP support so she had no trouble meeting fund raising thresholds. They couldn't get her over the polling threshold though.

Is a strong and viable candidate. Ironic indeed that Gabbard will not commit to a debate with a primary challenger(s) given that her seat in Congress is at stake.

20. Meghan McCain Clashes With 'View' Co-Hosts on Tulsi Gabbard: She's No 'Russian Stooge'

Aug 2019

It is odd how Tulsi Gabbard gets support from Russians and Republicans. Perhaps because the main thing she brings to the table is to attack Democrats and other Democratic candidates, except for Bernie, with a boost from foreign Russian outlets.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/meghan-mccain-clashes-with-view-co-hosts-on-tulsi-gabbard-shes-no-russian-stooge

“The Republicans like her, and I think she’s a real Trojan horse here because when you look at her record, in particular, she’s apologized for it but she was very anti-LGBTQ community,” co-host Sunny Hostin said Thursday on The View. “She also has praised Trump for meeting with Kim Jong Un three times.”

“That’s why they like her,” liberal host Joy Behar quipped.

Hostin, meanwhile, went on to highlight that Gabbard voted for a measure that would prevent Syrian refugees from settling in America, adding that the Democratic lawmaker also has refused to call Assad a war criminal.

* * *
This prompted co-host Ana Navarro to note that she may just be “paranoid” but Gabbard has suddenly received a lot of support from people “who used to dislike her tremendously.” “There is a lot of writings in Russia Today and Russian traffic around Tulsi,” Navarro stated, referencing the notorious Russian propaganda media arm. “There is something going on. I suspect it’s not knowingly by her because I think she’s a decent human being who served this country, but I’m paranoid.”
