Joe's Labor Day Message via email to supporters without a donation pitch

Today, I'm asking you to do one thing, and it has nothing to do with donating money to this campaign.

When you cross paths with someone working a job that makes your day-to-day life better—and I promise you, it will happen many times today—tell them "thank you."

Tell them you appreciate the work that they do. That it matters to you, and to your community.

That's it.

Say thank you to the people who build our roads and bridges. Keep our water systems working. Teach our kids and take care of the sick among us. Race into our burning buildings. Grow our food, build our cars, and pick up the garbage off our streets.

Say thank you—because these are the people who make America run. Not the Wall Street bankers, not the CEOs or hedge fund managers. Ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

Today, you'll notice that a lot of politicians are afraid to say the word "union."

It's one of the ugliest things about politics: The tendency to take a concept we all ought to be able to agree on, and contort it into something unrecognizable and divisive. Something false.

Here's the truth: Unions built the American middle class. With the dues they paid, the picket lines they walked, and the negotiations they sweated through, fighting for rights that benefit every American worker.

Minimum wage. Overtime pay. The 40-hour workweek. Being able to take weekends off. Non-union workers only have these rights because of the sacrifices made by organized labor.

I promise you if I’m elected president, together, we’ll protect and strengthen the right to organize and collectively bargain.

And, to workers: I’ll never forget the battles you’ve waged and victories you’ve won, and I’ll never forget to stand with you and with labor unions every day.

-Joe

The struggle for workers’ rights is not over. At one point in our nation’s history laborers had very little rights, and basically no protections. At other times, worker unions have had power to enact legislation protecting employee rights and dignity. Under the current president, the pendulum is swinging back towards the employer and Big Business today. This is clearly at the expense of middle class and low-wage workers. This creates a system of “haves” and “have-nots,” and an American economy that has left some behind. That’s why it’s imperative that we elect Joe Biden the next President of the United States - to stop this shift toward Big Business, rebuild the middle class, and restore the dignity of work.

Joe Biden has said “The middle class isn’t a number -- it’s a set of values. Owning your home. Sending your kids to college. Being able to save and get ahead. Across the country, too many families are being left behind. The next president needs to understand what the current one doesn’t: In America, no matter where you start in life, there should be no limit to what you can achieve.

We need to rebuild the middle class, and this time make sure everybody comes along -- regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or disability.”

Biden understands the importance of a strong middle class - it’s something he’s supported and fought for his entire life. His family moved from Pennsylvania to Delaware when he was a kid so his dad could find work. He understands the struggle that so many middle class families are facing today.

Biden’s plan to restore the basic bargain for American workers states: The American middle class built this country. Yet today, CEOs and Wall Street are putting profits over workers, plain and simple. It’s wrong. There used to be a basic bargain in this country that when you work hard, you were able to share in the prosperity your work helped create. It’s time to restore the dignity of work and give workers back the power to earn what they’re worth.

In an era when unions have been under attack, deliberately weakened by policy and ideological nonsense, this is a great message to members: thank you, we appreciate what you're doing and have done and help is on the way.

Simple. genuine. Also presidential.
