It's looking like Elizabeth Warren is the 2020 Democratic candidate to beat

If she wins in Iowa and NH she will run away with it.

Business Insider

Former Vice President Joe Biden has been the frontrunner of the Democratic primary race to this point, but he's at risk of losing his spot at the top to Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the progressive firebrand senator.

Warren is the only candidate in the Democratic field whose support and favorability has surged over time while Biden's has decreased, even among groups that disproportionately support him.

Biden's support in Morning Consult's weekly Democratic primary survey has fallen by three percentage points since mid-March while Warren's has doubled in the same timeframe.

In Monmouth University polling alone, Warren's net favorability has increased by six percentage points since May while Biden's has decreased by a full 19 percentage points.

And while many pundits have questioned Warren's "likability" since her first run for office in 2012, she currently has the highest net favorability rating out of the entire Democratic field at +54.

8. It's about turnout!
Mon Sep 2, 2019, 09:08 PM
Sep 2019

I have already seen traces of Biden supporters saying that Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada don't matter for various reasons and the race REALLY begins in South Carolina. However, IF Warren wins Iowa and then goes on to win New Hampshire, it shatters Joe's whole electability argument. Much like happened in 2008, Clinton was up double digits in South Carolina UNTIL Obama won Iowa, then she fell and never recovered. She was no longer inevitable and people felt more free to vote their conscience.

Further.. I don't understand this concept of Biden as the one who can win.

It really seems like almost ANYONE can beat Trump EXCEPT for Biden, who will not inspire turnout.

Trump is wildly unpopular, but his base will show up anyway. But, people will still need a reason to vote other than "Not Trump" if you are asking them to spend hours in line, take a day off work or whatever other hurdles they have to jump. Not enough people are going to do that for Biden.. his record doesn't support that type of devotion. His plans won't inspire people to show up. Seriously, what's the message? "Nominate me so we can go back to the way things were, you remember, when you didn't show up to vote before?"

Warren, Sanders.. THEY will inspire people to stand in line because you can look at their plans and see tangible reasons to stand in line. Student debt cancellation alone will bring out MILLIONS of voters who will happily spend the day waiting to vote. Medicare for All, highly popular.. again, something people will be willing to stand in line for.

You want to risk this GIFT of an election? Promise people incrementalism and more of what they decided to stay home from in 2016.

To be barely above 50% given his name recognition is a really bad sign, especially given his name recognition. Clinton had a larger share of the black vote in in the 2008 primary. https://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/10/17/poll.blacks.democrats/ "Among black registered Democrats overall, Clinton had a 57 percent to 33 percent lead over Obama."

This shows the immense lack of enthusiasm for Biden and why he can't win in a general election. People WILL NOT stand in line for him.

The ONLY thing that loses to Trump is low voter turnout. That's just a fact. Look at 2016 as evidence. Clinton was up by 8 points in Wisconsin going into election day, but they had record low turnout in democratic areas and the state is lost.

Biden has a major enthusiasm gap. We've done this before. We did it in 2004 and lost. We did it in 2016 and lost. Do you really need it to happen 3 times to figure out that people aren't going to stand in line just to vote AGAINST someone? They want something to vote FOR and there is nothing in Joe Biden's history to vote for.

Sorry, but reality is you go with ANOTHER Iraq War voter you are going to lose another close election due to low voter turnout among democrats in key states.

Despite 100% name recognition and being the VP of a very popular recent president, he has been unable to crack 35% in any poll. I know there is the excuse of it being a "20 person race", but it is actually a 4-6 person race, not unlike many others we have had in the past. (mostly a 4 person race in reality with Biden, Warren, Sanders, Harris, being the only real contenders). The fact that so many people have currently chosen "not Biden" is quite remarkable.

Another poll out today (https://www.investors.com/news/elizabeth-warren-joe-biden-sanders-democratic-race-biden-vs-trump/) shows how weak his support has become. I am sure how some will say this is just ANOTHER outlier, but I wonder how many OUTLIERS does it take to create a trend?

It is hardly opinion to point out that the VP of a very popular president SHOULD be walking away with this nomination and not struggling to maintain a lead and already dismissing the relevance of early states.

As I responded to you in another thread, Warren won the same percentage of AA voters as Hillary did in 2016. The polls now include two AA candidates and Obama's running mate. Those numbers will change as others drop out. To imply that AA voters will not vote for her is ridiculous with no factual basis. Yet you keep repeating it while saying Biden supporters are not unfairly attacking Warren. You can prove the latter is true, in your case, if you stop using this false attack.

http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/08/elizabeth-warren-is-struggling-to-draw-black-voters.html

It’s not surprising that Warren isn’t that strong among black voters. She is, for all her “populism,” a former Harvard professor representing a very white state. Her following is disproportionately college-educated, higher income, and self-consciously progressive — people who are sometimes called “wine track” voters (despite her professed affection for beer). Black Democrats are significantly less likely to self-identify as “progressives” than white Democrats.

Indeed, the one-dimensional nature of Warren’s support is holding her back in places like South Carolina, where, according to a new Post and Courier poll, she is leading Biden among white voters but running a weak fourth among black voters, leaving her a bit behind Sanders overall.

As far as candidates dropping out here’s a break down of how that plays out

Morning Consult's polling of voters' 2nd choices indicates no one can catch Biden by other

candidates dropping out or fading, simply because he does better or almost as well as any other candidate when voters are asked who their second choice would be.

https://morningconsult.com/2020-democratic-primary/

Sanders supporters, when asked for their 2nd choice:
Biden 30%, Warren 27%, Harris 7%

Warren supporters, when asked for their 2nd choice:
Sanders 23%, Harris 20%, Biden 19%

Harris supporters, asked for their 2nd choice:
Warren 28%, Biden 23%, Sanders 12%

Buttigieg supporters, asked for their 2nd choice:
Warren 22%, Biden 20%, Harris 17%

So, if any of these candidates dropped out or drastically lost support, apparently Biden would pick up approximately as many of their supporters as his nearest rivals would.

And in case anyone's wondering about Biden supporters' 2nd choice:
Sanders 26%, Warren 19%, Harris 13%

Mon Sep 2, 2019, 09:19 PM
Sep 2019

this article was written (and that Monmuth's director had admitted was an outlier by the itme the article in the OP was published), and saying Warren is "surging" when her numbers have been creeping up slowly for months.

A Harris X poll I posted about this weekend used the words "inching past" to describe Warren finally doing better than Sanders among likely voters in their poll.

Warren is slowly, quite slowly, gaining more support from the progressive bloc of the party that Sanders had dominated earlier this year. She now has roughly the same amount of support he does (she's in 2nd place in some polls, he's in 2nd place in others), which is definitely better than having about a quarter of that bloc of support, as she did earlier this year.

But there's no real sign yet that she'll ever overtake Biden.

And she hasn't been doing as well as even Sanders, let alone Biden, in the polls of different candidates in match-ups against Trump.

In 2016, Warren won re-election with the same percentage of AA voters as HRC.

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/4-things-elizabeth-warrens-last-election-can-tell-us-about-2020/

This "AA voters won't vote for Warren" seems to be the latest smear Biden supporters are using against Warren and it is absurd. Obama's former running mate and two AA candidates are in the race. She has been warmly received at AA events and will get the same percentage of those votes, or more, than HRC did in the general. This really smells of desperation by Biden supporters.

No personal attacks or flaming
Do not personally attack, insult, flame, threaten, bully, harass, stalk, negatively call-out, ascribe ugly ulterior motives to, or make baseless claims about any member of this community. Do not post in a manner that is hostile, abusive, or aggressive toward any member of this community.
Why we have this rule: Civility begets quality discussions. Democratic Underground members are highly passionate about politics which means discussions can get heated -- but they don't need to get nasty. There's no reason why a community of intelligent adults who agree on a majority of political issues can't have a conversation without insulting each other or resorting to other anti-social behaviors.

"There's been a huge shift among African-American Democrats from Clinton to Obama. African-American Democrats used to be reluctant to support Obama because they didn't think a black man could be elected. Then Obama won Iowa and nearly won New Hampshire. Now they believe," said Bill Schneider, CNN senior political analyst.

"Obama's lead over Clinton among black men is more than 50 points, and among black women, once a Clinton stronghold, Obama has an 11 point advantage," said CNN polling director Keating Holland.

others miss...is that AA voters are not left...they are moderates. I campaign with them. Warren has little appeal for them...and I do not believe that changes. And it doesn't matter is she wins an all white state with very left leaning Democrats...their concern is beating Trump not other Democrats...regardless of Iowa or New Hampshire which she is not leading in at the moment...he sweeps super Tuesday and is on his way to the nomination...this is my prediction. No way Iowa or New Hampshire will determine the nominee in 20. If Warren can't attract AA voters she should not be the nominee...very important constituency. I will vote blue no matter who naturally as I always do..but the fallout for another four years of Trump will be horrible and very difficult to recover from especially as we likely lose the house with a preceived left/socialist candidate...and they (GOP ) will brand her as a socialist whether it is true or not which it isn't.

And it is NOT a 20 candidate race. 14 of those 20 candidates don't really even exist. There are only 4-6 viable candidates in reality and everyone knows that. Biden is running FAR TOO LOW in the AA vote given where he SHOULD BE running. But, his support is very weak.

If he loses Iowa, he will lose New Hampshire, if he loses those 2, he loses Nevada. If he goes in South Carolina as a 3 time loser, he loses. Which is a good thing, because the ONLY risk of getting another 4 years of Trump is someone like Biden who would depress turnout. With Warren or Sanders or Harris you will see close to 60% nationwide turnout and overwhelming victories. With Biden you will get another 55% turnout and end up losing swing states by small numbers and likely not take back the Senate.

I relate to Warren politically but Biden is, hands down, a better GE canidate. That said, Biden will win SC. a6nd the South in its entirety. My guess is he will do well in rust belt and on West coast, as well.

Unless she gets more support from POC don't see it happening. I wouldn't use outlier polls to make your case.
If she ends up being nominee I will work hard to gotv for her.
