This catastrophe could be Trumps downfall, Nobel-winning economist says

Thats Nobel-winning economist Robert Shiller explaining in an editorial for the Guardian published on Monday how a downturn in the economy could be what finally marks the ruin of Trumps turbulent presidency.
During a recession, people pull back and reassess their views. Consumers spend less, avoiding purchases that can be postponed: a new car, home renovations and expensive holidays, Shiller continued. Businesses spend less on new factories and equipment, and put off recruiting.
The public narrative he was referring to is Trumps lifetime pursuit of putting his glam life on display for everybody to see and aspire to fancy cars, beautiful women, private jets, gold toilets. Look at me, Im rich and you can be, too!
That, Shiller says, has less appeal when the economy goes belly up.

(12,712 posts)Many of us are way ahead of the curve there.
We are so pulled back that we might vanish into our constant reassessment of our views. Our postponement of our purchases happened a while ago and not spending is more important than spending less, even. We might be so lucky to have an old car and...what's a new car again? At least we don't have problems with home renovations because, well, we don't have homes, but you can get few items to put in the car or tent, move a few things around, and call it that.

(13,058 posts)Making economic predictions is an inexact science. If the economy holds up through 2020 we have got to beat Trump anyway. Lets not become complacent and count on the economy to sink him.

The Mouth
(3,149 posts)Already the narrative is "The left will do anything to get rid of Trump, including wrecking the economy".
Anyone who gloats over or ascribes any positive outcome (including getting rid of cheeto Benito) to any economic bad news deserves to be hung, drawn, and quartered IMHO. Or at least shunned and ostracized.
A downturn, even a recession *may* happen, it's always a non-zero possibility, but I sure as hell don't want it to.
