BY ZACK FINK NEW YORK CITY PUBLISHED 6:26 PM ET SEP. 05, 2019
Governor Cuomo is pushing to upend the presidential primary calendar, making New York jump close to the head of the line by having voters head to the polls in February instead of late April, sources tell NY1.
Cuomo is considering vetoing a bill that would set the presidential primary on April 28, putting it just weeks after the pivotal Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary instead.
As a sweetener from Cuomo, sources say New York would also move its legislative primaries for state Senate and Assembly, currently scheduled for June 23, 2020, to coincide with a February presidential primary, potentially helping incumbents survive any challenges.
Sources tell NY1 Governor Cuomo and top legislative leaders have recently held discussions about a potential move.

(19,131 posts)why the hell do they always get to be first? Mix it up and let some other states get into the mix. It's not like Iowa has a great cross-section of diversity.

(11,969 posts)New York is a very expensive place to campaign. The possible dynamics of needing to spend that much money so early (and before even getting to the Super Tuesday contests) is interesting.

(560 posts)provide the lions share of delegates in the primary and electoral votes in the general, realize that theyre being marginalized in the process by small, non-representative farming states, there should be a revolt that results in a single national primary day. They should all be sprinting to be first. Iowa and NH? Screw that.

(7,403 posts)Everyone trying to be earlier and earlier. I believe NH and IA actually have state laws that automatically trigger moving their contests ahead of anyone that tries to go before them, that's probably why NY is trying to be 3rd in line.

(31,261 posts)Blue states should be deciding our nominee. The only early states that should stay in are New Hampshire (has a recent blue streak, except the recent governor) and Nevada (blue and becoming more so). Iowa and South Carolina can be replaced with a Colorado or New Mexico.
