Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumA "desperate, rattled Trump" is considering a new VP -- like Nikki Haley.
Of course he is. And we're NUTS if we don't have at least one woman in one of the slots on the ticket. If we have two men, I guarantee that Trump will replace Pence with a woman, whether Haley, or Ernst, or somebody else.
https://news.yahoo.com/tensions-strain-between-trump-pence-heading-into-2020-election-090031895.html
On the surface, Trump and Pence insist they have a great relationship and are working closer than ever to win reelection in 2020. (Theyve consistently beaten back rumors that former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley is in the running to replace Pence on the 2020 ticket.)
SNIP
But the relationship between their political teams has soured greatly in the past year, according to a dozen Trump and Pence aides and Republican advisers familiar with the dynamic. In particular, rumors that Kushner and Ivanka Trump wanted to consider replacements for Pence specifically trying to find a woman running mate to help win back the suburbs in 2020 have worried the vice presidents camp, according to Trump and Pence campaign advisers who spoke on background for this story.
However, none of those advisers claimed to have heard Kushner or Ivanka Trump directly discuss Pences replacement, and a senior White House official categorically denied the couple had been involved in discussing changes to the 2020 ticket.

(11,955 posts)I don't expect that Trump keeps him much in the loop. And if he knows of anything sketchy that he didn't do anything about, he could be seen as complicit making it hard for him to talk about without self-incriminating. He could go for immunity, but if he's not accused of anything, why even open that can of worms?

(31,261 posts)If he believes a woman helps him win, Pence is done. My guess is that he pick a woman who is an asslicker, like Ernst or the governor of Wyoming, or Dickie's little cold-hearted daughter. Haley is too smart to tie herself to him unless she is sure that he will win (a proposition that is becoming less and less certain).

(144,005 posts)Pence will continue to be VPOTUS until Jan. 20, 2021 even if trump dumps Pence from the ticket and replace Pence with Niki Haley. The trouble with it that trump may need Pence to pardon him when Biden beats trump
I can see trump resigning if he loses and then asking Pence to pardon him (trump would have already pardon his family)
Link to tweet
It is not clear if a POTUS can pardon himself and so trump needs to keep Pence happy

Dumping Pence will make it very unlikely that Pence would be happy to pardon trump

(6,137 posts)Haley is absolutely dumb enough to agree to run with trump. Even if she is not sure they can win, she can help keep gop coalition together and help gop state races especially in suburbs.
If we continue to underestimate trumps chances, we will lose in 2020 bigger than in 2016. Biden better select Warren as running mate should he win the nomination.

However, Nikki Haley was also a Koch plant in Trump's administration. She was an ALEC member busily assisting their corruption and subversion of government through legislation, and she's done a lot of powerful sucking up to the religious right herself, claiming to be part of it.

(11,955 posts)Maybe it depends on which female. I'm not sure what Haley offers over Pence in terms of rust belt state appeal...? Is it just that having a woman on the ticket would swing enough female voters in those states (if there's no woman on the Dem ticket)? That would be interesting polling to see.
But I agree, if a male heads our ticket, we would be well served by a female VP.

(5,491 posts)Otherwise, if he embarrasses Pence by replacing him, Pence could turn on him. If Pence got wind that he was about to resign he could pre-emptively resign, saying that he and mother can no longer in good conscience continue to be part of Trump's administration. He could cause Trump some real problems. And depending on what he said, it could call into question the integrity of any new VP nominee.
The question is can Pence pull that off? Maybe. Think about it. This is the peak of his political career. Being fired by Trump would bring a lot of opportunities to make a lot of money. A book? A movie? Speeches? TV commentator?
