Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWill Jessica Cisneros join 'The Squad' if (and when) elected to TX-24?
I don't know. Until Elizabeth Warren stepped in, Cisneros most high profile backers where AOC and the so called "Justice Democrats"
Will Cisneros win TX-24 if nominated? Absolutely. TX-24 is a D+30 district, with the highest proportion of Latino/Hispanics in the country - 95%. 20% are not citizens, and Cisneros works as a human rights/immigration lawyer.
Should Warren have endorsed Cisneros? Yes. It is an indictment of the Party that turfing out the incumbent, Henry Cuellar, was left to the likes of the "Justice Democrats", when his public statements, voting record, and donor profile, all strongly suggest that the the only reason Cuellar has a D after his name is that there was no other way to get elected.
In 2018, Cuellar fundraised against MJ Hegar, endorsing the Republican incumbent, John Carter when he was"badly in need of cash" https://www.dallasnews.com/news/politics/2018/09/13/mj-hegar-and-other-democrats-miffed-at-rep-henry-cuellar-for-helping-her-gop-opponent-rep-john-carter/
No doubt trump would identify Jessica Cisneros as a most worthy member of 'The Squad', but then again, he won't be around to find out.

(112,056 posts)Cuellar remains popular in that district. An endorsement from Elizabeth Warren doesn't carry much weight in the Laredo area and will likely be viewed as an intrusion that will backfire on Warren.

(7,277 posts)She is anti-gun violence, and family separations, while Cuellar supports both. Cuellar is A- NRA. Beto should do more than talk the talk. For heavens sake, Cuellar fundraised against MJ in a tight contest.

(112,056 posts)I don't think Beto is going to risk alienating Cuellar by choosing an underdog like Cisneros. Beto is concentrating on his campaign and his issues and knows that Cuellar's vote will be there if he becomes president (whether in 2020 or further in the future). Beto has been shrewd for the past several months to avoid aligning himself with Cisneros (or any other candidate) and I don't see where the political calculus has been altered with Warren's endorsement.
Even during Beto's Senate campaign in 2018, he barely mingled with any of the other Democratic candidates for statewide office. That move can either be lauded or criticized, but Beto does have that rebel "lone wolf" personality that is a part of his identity. Beto showed his support for other Texas Democratic candidates by donating to their campaigns. He has nothing to gain by endorsing Cisneros.

That's what Cuellar said about endorsing Carter ' 'sometimes friendship is more powerful than partisanshi'p . Very disappointed.
Cuellar is pro Gun violence, pro kids in cages, and fundraised against MJ. Yes Beto is a politician. And not much more than that it seems to me.

(112,056 posts)I also think that you are employing hyperbole by stating that Cuellar is pro gun violence and pro kids in cages. Cuellar voted for H.R. 8 that would create new background check requirements for gun transfers between unlicensed individuals. Cuellar also spoke up about the plight of young migrants while President Obama was president--if anything it appears that he wants to solve the problem of locking kids in cages by stopping the immigration flow across the Rio Grande. That seems like the best solution to the problem and one that my preferred candidate has advocated.
And while I have no fondness for Carter in Williamson County, it is also important to consider that MJ Hegar is not a traditional candidate for office. I am definitely examining the other seven candidates that are running for Senate in 2020 because I think that two or three of them may be a better fit for the office.

(39,367 posts)He has made gun violence the centerpiece of his campaign and he cant take a stand against a major NRA enabler in his own backyard? Pointless.
