Democratic presidential candidate Beto ORourke says banks and credit card companies are helping to enable the epidemic of mass shootings across the country.
ORourke in a Wednesday announcement urged banks and credit card companies to start refusing to provide services to some gun buyers and manufacturers, expanding on his sweeping gun reform proposals in the wake of mass shootings that have rocked the nation in recent weeks.
The former congressman is urging the financial institutions to stop providing services for the sale of assault weapons.
He also is calling on banks to refuse their services for the sales of firearms online or at gun shows where background checks are not required, asking the services be suspended until universal background checks become law.
However inadvertent or deliberate, credit card companies and banks profit off of those who terrorize our communities. And we know that in this moment, no one can sit on the sidelines. Everyone has a responsibility to do their part, ORourke said in an email to supporters.

(5,227 posts)Private banks and credit card companies were part of the free enterprise system. We start dictating what kind of things they allow for purchase will be the day we lean toward dictatorship. This is not a winning proposal. We need to win over voters, not scare them with such unenforceable plans.

(4,558 posts)Are 2 completely different things.
We use public support for boycotting certain companies because of ties or contributions all the time.
Pretty symbolic only as even if Banks/lending institutions agreed, identifying transactions of such a nature would be near impossible to actually effect.
As long as he doesn't go into pushing for legislation or executive order for such, it's still well within the tenants of free enterprise.
