Biden Smacks Down Bernie Sanders For Lecturing Him On Cancer Coverage

During Thursday night’s Democratic primary debate, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders tried to say that his health plan is better for those with cancer than Joe Biden’s, and the former VP was having none of it.

Not only did Biden tell Sanders that nobody under his plan would ever go bankrupt if they were diagnosed with cancer, but the former VP reminded the Vermont senator that Medicare for All would take years to implement, while the Biden health care plan would kick in immediately at a lower cost.

“Every single person who is diagnosed with cancer or any other disease can automatically become part of this plan,” Biden said. “And we’re talking 4, 6, 8, 10 years … before we go Medicare for All. Come on!”

No one should be left carrying the financial burden of bankruptcy because of illness.

Good luck to you and your son. My family has been there, too.

Btw, I agree that Biden's plan is the best direction, particularly for people who need treatment now, in the moment. In the meantime, we can work on getting a handle on costs associated with healthcare services and pharmaceuticals, costs which need to be reduced to make Medicare 4 All or any other universal plan viable. The greatest good for the greatest number is where we start while moving to the ultimate goal that all our candidates now share: healthcare for every American, womb to tomb. We'll get there but it won't be easy or quick.

You are so right about getting the costs for health care and pharmaceuticals down. Every American deserves health care. I can't imagine someone going through cancer with no insurance. The surgery, endless tests and doctor and hospital visits is never ending with something like cancer. One thing everyone should be able to have is a colonoscopy. I can't stress the importance of that enough.
I wish research could come up with a simple test for that.

untested program. Many seniors have retirement benefits packages. Their retirement benefits act like employers who continue to either offer affordable premiums insurance or to pay the premiums.
Those benefits are carried over from employment. With Medicare, they give 100 percent coverage, no deductible, low drug costs.

My mom had Kaiser at 260 per month, everything covered and group drug rates. I have benefits that pay my Medicare fee and the premium for a PPO insurance in addition, in full.

If Sanders and Warren are to make a good case, they need to see why some like their plans, not just their doctors.

PS. Neither mom nor I had high paying jobs. Instead, we had good benefits. Fairly, I will pay more
taxes to see others covered. But heck no, I don’t want to give up my plan. It even provides for out of country emergency and urgent care.

The only other large scale fed healthcare program I know of as tested is the V.A. Great sometimes for some, terrible sometimes for others.

And Bernie, NHS is not a good sales model for comparison.

At least that is how it sounded to me.

And no - that would not work because why would anyone bother with paying for insurance if they could get catastrophic coverage for free whenver they needed it.

That is why it makes sense for the money that people are paying NOW into insurance go into a M4All fund.

The other thing that MFAll does is that it relieves doctors from having to deal with insurance - which is costly.

There are possible problems with M4All - esp. in this country if we get people in charge who want to shortchange the coverage / medical care that people get. But that is not the argument that people who are against it make.

A single payer system was attempted in Vermont and only lasted a few years before being abandoned. And I believe single payer health care couldn't get enough votes in California.

It's clear to me what's the best way. Add a public option, make Medicare available at age 55, add other things to the ACA. Who cares about slogans.
