Last Night I Was Wrong When I Called for Castro to Step Down About What Joe Said...

...looks like I was wrong big time:

Castro was right: Fact-checkers whiff on a key exchange in the third Democratic debate

[link:https://www.alternet.org/2019/09/castro-was-right-fact-checkers-whiff-on-a-key-exchange-in-the-third-democratic-debate/|

he most tweeted-about moment in the third Democratic primary debate on Thursday night came when Julián Castro accused Joe Biden of having forgotten a central point of his healthcare proposal. A day later, Castro’s been panned by the pundits for being overly aggressive in his attack and called out by the fact-checkers for the substance of his dispute. But whatever one thinks of his tone, Castro was absolutely correct about one of the crucial differences between Biden’s approach to healthcare and those embraced by more progressive candidates.

You wouldn’t know Castro got it right reading the headlines this morning. “Castro’s Attack On Biden For Blanking On His Health Care Plan Falls Flat,” read one from Politifact that was accompanied by a “mostly false” rating. “Castro appears to misrepresent Biden’s health care plan during debate,” was how USA Today put it. The Washington Post named Castro one of the losers of the night because “his biggest optical win didn’t have substance to back it up.”

he spoke, he was wrong in his accusation. Specifically, he repeatedly emphasized one thing Biden did say---"buy in"---but ignored the fact that he also said people who could not afford to buy in would "automatically" be covered. Castro's repetition of "Did you forget what you said two minutes ago?" was ageism, pure and simple.

Most of us are better than that.

With this hit piece, Alternet lost any tiny bit of benefit of the doubt it might have had left.

It seems that when Castro referred to his grandmother being on Medicare, Biden heard a story of a low-income woman who couldn’t afford coverage. “Your grandmother would not have to buy in. If she qualifies for Medicaid, she would automatically be enrolled,” he said.

Distorting reality is alternet's specialty.

I am not surprised that the anti-Biden far left was scouring alternet to make them feel better since Biden had a spectacular performance in the debate.

The story in the OP is written by Joshua Holland, a frequent presence in far-left publications like common dreams. He is also David Sirota's buddy.

The Democratic Party is committed to universal coverage.
Castro is for universal coverage.
Biden is for universal coverage.
Everyone on that stage is for universal coverage.

Castro knew that but claimed that Biden's plan would bar many millions from access to healthcare. That was dishonest and dishonorable, and damaging to the party message. And that audience knew it and booed him.

Sat Sep 14, 2019, 06:35 AM

“The option I’m proposing is a Medicare for all...a Medicare for choice. If you want Medicare...if you lose the job from your insurance company...from your employer, you automatically can buy into this. You don’t have...no preexisting condition can stop you from buying in. You get covered, period.

Stephanopoulos also drives me nuts, trying repeatedly to get a sound bite of candidates saying they’re going to have raise taxes, when Warren correctly points out it’s not about taxes, it’s about total cost. I’d rather pay $10k more in taxes if it saves me $20k in premiums, copays and deductibles. I come out $10k ahead. And Bernie is right, that money should go right into your paycheck instead of being deducted by employer. Sorry, Joe, but the jab at Bernie the socialist was not only low, but wrong.

primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
