states and has a less-than-straightforward history with Medicare for All people is not what we need at this time. He's all over the place on it, depending on where he's at

June 15, 2017: Writes a Facebook post that says, “A single-payer Medicare-for-all program is the best way to ensure all Americans get the health care they need.”

June 17, 2017: Writes a much longer Facebook post saying, “We need a single-payer health care system for all Americans,” but that he wouldn’t co-sponsor the House bill for single-payer health care because it excluded for-profit providers from participating in the system.

September 20, 2017: Tells the Texas Observer that he likes the Sanders bill but says he disagrees with the lack of copays and premiums for all Americans. He’d prefer that Americans kick in something.

And this one really blows me away. Did he sleep though what the Republicans did to the ACA? WTF. Beto might be great for Texas but I think he's wrong for America.

January 18, 2018: O’Rourke posts a campaign video where he talks a bit more about his vision: “What’s my vision? Universal health care and very likely that will involve some form of a single-payer system. Some expansion of Medicare, perhaps from where it is right now at 65 all the way down to zero. Or I’m open, if somebody has a better way to do this, including especially Republicans, I’m open to their vision of how to get there.” He then goes on to talk about adding Medicare to the marketplace as a public option as “a step we can take on the road to getting to universal health care.”

Mon Mar 18, 2019, 09:52 AM
Mar 2019

MANDATED medicare for all is unpopular. An opt-in is popular. An opt-in for over 50 is even more popular. Government negotiated drug prices is very popular.

I hate those labels. "Medicare for all"... "The green new deal"... Even "Gun control/Gun Rights".

Those aren't things. They are labels. They mean too many things to too many different people to be of any use.

When you break down the positions on the actual policies, bernie is an extremist. That is generally unpopular. Just at right wing extremism is popular in a certain slice of the electorate, it's unpopular over all when you break it down into actual policy.

I'm not saying the positions are bad, they just don't have broad support. And if you are never elected, and sit in the senate and NEVER sponsor any of them as successful bills, what does a good policy even mean?

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:

He has plenty of time to roll out a platform. It's smarter to take the time to address issues as they come up in the real world.

Bernie Sanders released tax returns on Friday evening that showed he and his wife Jane made a little over $200,000 in 2014.

The Vermont Senator paid about $27,653 in taxes, about 13.4% of his total income, according to the tax returns. The couple made a little over $8,000 in charitable donations, according to the seven-page document released by the campaign.

My point is that it's unfair to represent that a "summary page" is ALL the 2014 info Bernie has EVER released. How anyone can disagree with this is beyond me!!

175. Those were not full tax returns
Mon Mar 18, 2019, 05:29 PM
Mar 2019

sanders has not released his full tax returns. This has been fact checked https://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2016/apr/06/bernie-s/bernie-sanders-has-released-few-tax-returns-compar/

The 2014 filings Sanders released consist of just the first two summary pages of his Form 1040 and the equivalent summary pages from his home-state Vermont tax form.

Why does this matter? Unlike most of the other candidates, Sanders has not released the succeeding pages -- the nitty gritty detail of things like charitable donations and other types of itemized deductions. For instance, Clinton’s release for tax year 2014 is 44 pages long, or more than 10 times the length of Sanders’ for the same year.
.....

Tax and disclosure experts we contacted agreed that Sanders’ current disclosures are weak by historical standards.

"If I filed the first two pages of my return with the IRS, it would not take long for them to ding me," said Kenneth A. Gross of the law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and a specialist in political disclosure and ethics. "There is a lot of information on the pages following the cover pages."

Joseph J. Thorndike, the Tax Analysts official who heads the Tax History Project, agreed.

Sanders "has not, in fact, released his most recent tax return," Thorndike said. "He has released a portion of that return. The IRS would not accept a Form 1040 as a complete return and neither should voters. Also, it’s worth noting that Sanders has not released any portion of his older returns. … If Mitt Romney had tried to release an incomplete return in 2012, the media would never have accepted it."

As I said, and you duly noted, he did EXACTLY that several weeks after first releasing a "summary page"... here's what you correctly stated ('cept for the "grudgingly" part):

"He initially released only the Form 1040, basically the summary. After being blasted....
....for not releasing the entire 7-page return, he grudgingly added the additional five pages several weeks later."

What more do you want from the guy?! Why do some here refuse to acknowledge at least what you did - I give you credit for that - which is that Bernie did MORE than release a mere "summary" of his 2014 tax returns. That's simply not true.

Mon Mar 18, 2019, 06:50 PM

Yes, he first released those two pages, hoping that would be enough (even though there was a dearth of details). It wasn't, so he hemmed and hawed a few more weeks and then came up with those other five pages.

But still, that wasn't what he and Jane originally promised. We're still waiting for what he said he would do. Is that too much to ask?

278. Again, no one is taking this claim seriously becuase there is no link
Tue Mar 19, 2019, 12:43 AM
Mar 2019

It may be that you do not understand the concept of a link. Here is a simplistic definition https://techterms.com/definition/link

A link (short for hyperlink) is an HTML object that allows you to jump to a new location when you click or tap it. Links are found on almost every webpage and provide a simple means of navigating between pages on the web.
Links can be attached to text, images, or other HTML elements. Most text links are blue, since that is standard color web browsers use to display links. However, links can be any color since the style of the link text may be customized using HTML or CSS styles. In the early days of the web, links were underlined by default. Today, underlining links is less common.
When a link is applied to an image, the link tag encapsulates, or surrounds the image tag. Since the image tag is nested inside the link tag, the image itself becomes a link. This method can be used to apply links to other elements such as <div> and <span> objects. However, since CSS can be used to stylize a link, an <a> tag with a CSS class or ID attribute is often used in place of a <div> or <span> tag.

Again, you have no proof for this claim and so no one is taking this claim seriously. Sanders has not released his full tax returns in the real world and so is not a serious candidate

Joe Biden

289. Washington State is adopting a ballot access law
Tue Mar 19, 2019, 02:25 PM
Mar 2019

This is great news https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/434412-washington-senate-passes-bill-that-would-keep-trump-off-2020-ballot

Washington's state Senate passed a bill this week that would drop President Trump from the state's 2020 presidential ballot until he releases his tax returns.

The bill, which advanced Tuesday to the state's House of Representatives, according to CBS News, would require any candidate on the ballot for president in the state to release five years of tax returns before appearing in a general or primary election.

Senators voted by a 28-21 margin to approve the bill, according to CBS. The state's attorney general and solicitor told lawmakers in a letter this week that the proposal likely was constitutional, but analysts expect the law if passed to be challenged in federal court.

"The disclosure requirement you propose is likely Constitutional," the two wrote to lawmakers, according to CBS, adding that the measure "would definitely be challenged in court."

Mon Mar 18, 2019, 05:20 PM
Mar 2019

He has $134.6M in "un-itemized" donations, 58% of all donations. Other than them being less than $200 each, does anyone know the source and amount of any of them?

Last time around, according to the FEC, one person made more than 500 individual donations for a total of $2900 (average of $5.65), another more than 1100 donations for a total of $5300 (average of $4.47) That's the way to keep the advertised average of "$27", but it's not totally accurate.

Inquiring minds would like to know the details of that $134.6M in un-itemized donations.

On Sunday, we were hearing that Beto hadn't released his fundraising numbers yet because they were low. Today we're hearing, "we more than likely had a lot more individual donations than he did".

Some might argue that it's desperate and irresponsible to put speculative storylines out ahead of the facts. Phony narratives hurt us in the 2016 general election. We can't let it happen again.

for another 13 days then he doesn't have to file an FEC report until July which means he doesn't have to deal with speculation and attacks about his contributors from the other candidates. He also doesn't have to pay campaign staff. That seems like a good strategy to me.

Biden is almost certainly going to catapult to the lead when he makes the announcement and he already has national name recognition. I don't see any advantage gained by announcing earlier.

whether that hurts him, or, perhaps, helps him. I'm sure Joe is judging what he considers to be the perfect timing. With his vast political experience, I'll concede he probably knows much better than me!! haha!! I just think he's conceded the limelight to so many other candidates who are now running, that his announcement might not get the attention it otherwise would've gotten had he declared earlier.

But, again, what the hell do I know? One thing I do know... if Joe runs and wins, I would gladly support and vote for him over tRump the pee-resident. But, then again, I'd also vote for Satan over that asshole!! (Satan couldn't be any worse than what we have now!!)

If the "Big Mo" gets rolling with Beto, it will be hard to stop him. Remember, Obama was less about actual policy, and more about "inspiring". Beto seems to have learned those lessons well. Plus, with $6.1 million, he can avail himself to some of the best policy wonks. He'll figure it out. I'm still with Kamala though. I still think she has the best chance of beating Trump.

110. Beto simply has superior instincts
Mon Mar 18, 2019, 01:13 PM
Mar 2019

Someone with poor instincts can only think obvious, can only think here and now. No finesse or calm. A person with poor instincts would have been running to a microphone to blurt out the numbers immediately.

The calm and great instincts are what enabled Beto to maintain the 52-42 favorable rating in Texas, which shouldn't be possible for a Democrat. He realized he couldn't go on attack against Cruz. The attacks on Cruz are already built in. Same with Trump.

Beto actually regretted the one debate moment in which he succumbed and was overly negative against Cruz.

An attack dog type is not what we need. I've seen debate watchers in my living room immediately turn against that type. When I watch the senate hearings I always look for people who are very effective while avoiding attack dog mode. That's what made Amy Klobuchar stand so far above anyone else on our side in the Kavanuagh hearings. Beto would have handled it the same way. Listen then adjust your questioning. Don't jump in there with attack dog agenda and no flexibility.

This from his first day in his grassroots style of raising monies. I admit this was something I had some reservations with his campaign over but he seemed to believe it would still work for him. Apparently he was right and I was wrong.

I also have to say I like how he's not falling for the labels and catch phrase traps. I'm deeply interested in seeing how he fleshes out on policy. I have some strong guesses, having followed him closely since January of 2017, where he's going to land, but time will tell if I'm correct or not. He definitely seems to have an enthusiasm edge at this point and now he has the money to hire some stellar advisers to go with that enthusiasm edge.

I like how he didn't come out and brag when first asked about his first day totals. Instead he downplayed it as not being an issue and let the naysayers draw their own conclusions and dig their own holes.

I think he has as good a shot as anyone in our field at this point. He has good instincts and I suspect a lot of people will be pleased with his ideas nationally when he starts to share them.

Congratulations to Beto on a strong first day total!

I have 3 top tier and one "dream" and a wildcard candidate I've donated to so far. I'm pretty sure my dream one won't come to fruition (Buttigieg) and this isn't a cycle for dreams, but for what it's worth Harris is in my top tier 3. My tier is based on who I think is actually electable. Not polling at this point, nor social media favorites. At this point that stuff is pure fluff to my eyes. All I care about is winning 2020, period the end. Beto was my wildcard, but maybe he's not such a wildcard after all? Time will tell, but I'm not seeing 2020 as in anyway similar to 2016 at this point.

I suspect this is going to be an exciting primary season. The msm and naysayers be damned!

No, the Texas Democratic Party did not give Beto O'Rourke $4.5M

The original tweet was posted by Xavier Perez, whose social media posts suggest he is backing Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary. He said the alleged contribution from the Texas Democrats to O’Rourke was actually money O’Rourke had given the party after his unsuccessful challenge last year against U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz.

The money transferred from O’Rourke’s Senate campaign to the party was not leftover from his race, as suggested by Perez’s tweet. No money was transferred from Beto for Texas to the Texas Democrats after Election Day.

Manny Garcia, executive director of the Texas Democratic Party, laughed when asked about the tweet and said any money transferred to the committee from O’Rourke went immediately into ongoing races across the state.

"That money went straight to our field operations," he said.

Beto O'Rourke campaigin:Bernie Sanders supporters fuel misinformation about Texas Democrat's record-breaking fundraising haul

That tweet was posted by Xavier Perez, a member of the Democratic county committee in Bronx, New York and a former volunteer for Mr Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign.

On Tuesday, Mr O'Rourke's director of communications Chris Evans told The Independent, "Beto's grassroots campaign raised a record-breaking $6,136,763 online from individuals in the first 24 hours after launching. Each and every single dollar of that came online from people, not from PACs, corporations, special interests or in the way described in this completely false tweet."

301. No, the Texas Democratic Party did not give Beto O'Rourke $4.5M
Fri Mar 22, 2019, 09:18 AM
Mar 2019

O’Rourke spokesman Chris Evans said the $6.1 million came from individuals (O’Rourke does not accept money from political action committees) and did not include $4.5 million from the state’s Democratic party.

"Each and every single dollar of that came online from people, not from PACs, corporations, special interests or in the way described in this completely false tweet," Evans said in an emailed comment.

O’Rourke told reporters on Wednesday that his haul from the first 24 hours in the race came from 128,000 unique contributions which averaged $48 each.

Fundraising reports from the first quarter of the race are not due to the Federal Election Commission until April 15 and O’Rourke’s campaign has not released a list of donors who contributed during his first day in the race.

I loved that Kamala was optimistic and positive. I've never seen her behave in a grumpy or sour way... that's one of the things that I like about her.

She's always very professional. From the top of her HAIR right down to the bottom of her SHOES, she's always looking her best and being her best, in both word and deed.

reaction to Beto's announcement was already churlish, since he just shrugged when asked about it and said, "It's a free country. Anybody can run."

His campaign was trying hard to raise more money for Bernie the day Beto announced, too.

I'm hoping that Bernie won't cause trouble for the Democratic nominee later (assuming he isn't), but his initial reactions to Beto entering the race aren't encouraging.

I thought that from the start. Then, I heard he met with Biden and Obama. And, just read that there are rumors they agreed to go as team. (probably started by me...LOL).

I think they'd be perfect *if he doesn't shoot his feet off. He never plans what he's gonna say.

Maybe that's what Biden's waiting for - to see if he can "make it" on his own?

Then there's the immediate "NOOOOO - no two white guys"

Beto would be a strong candidate on his own merits and abilities. I honestly think he could take this thing to the finish line all on his own if given a chance. Would Biden be smart enough to choose him if he were lucky enough to get the nomination? It's hard to tell. I think with his energy and youthful good looks, he'd definitely "steal" some of his spotlight just because he such a dynamic and interesting man.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing which DEMOCRAT gets the nomination.

vs. canned rhetoric. I, personally, have been yearning for someone who can really make us feel something. Someone who can make you tear up - like Mario Cuomo - Ted Kennedy.

For so long, people have thought we have to hide who we are. And for years, I have wonder why we don't take that route. Make people cry that people are starving and homeless in our country. Evoke some freaking emotion !!! No wonder selfishness is rampant.
