Julian Castro, under fire for jabs about Joe Biden's memory, says he won't 'play it safe'

HOUSTON -- With an eye to early caucuses and primaries now just a few months away, Julián Castro sought to use the Democrats' third presidential debate in his home state as a springboard.

He instead may have cracked his head on the side of the pool.

Castro's attempted takedown of former Vice President Joe Biden on health care drew immediate fire that it amounted mostly to an insult suggesting Biden has lost mental acuity.

Biden and Castro, a former housing secretary who also served former President Barack Obama, clashed Friday over what happened the night before.

Makes sense. When you're polling in 11th place, playing it safe is not a sensible strategy. thesquanderer Sep 2019 #4

Not that HIS memory is all so great, but you're giving ammunition to the enemy.

He had to do something. Anything. To get attention and separate himself from the pack. Well, he got attention, and separated himself from the pack. Not the way he wanted, of course. He won't be rising in the polls. But then again, if he had not attacked Biden the way he did, he still wouldn't have risen in the polls. So in the end it wasn't a gamble that paid off. Pretty much the same as Yang's move to give $1,000 a month to ten lucky persons. Simply a gamble that didn't pay off. Six months from now all of this will be forgotten, like it never happened. Because both of these guys will have dropped out. The only thing they'll have in six months is the title, "Former Presidential Candidate". Maybe that's all they wanted from this all along.

The Hail Mary may not work, but sometimes it's your only shot. Not sure he even threw the ball in the right direction this time, though.
