MSNBC is a political player, and many of the low-budget/low-power daytime anchors especially are required to push the approved themes. Same for talking heads who want to be invited more than once. Biden's this election's leader, so he gets the Hillary treatment.

That people like Joy will have to pander to viewers to avoid having her show boycotted? That is what happens to Fox News, if they change their tune people will stop watching, they will loose their viewership, who does it help to be constantly hearing praising the person you support? Are you going to find the truth about that person?

I know I am going to get a lot of negative responses from what I am going to write next, but I have seen .fanatism from Biden's supporters that I don't see anywhere else, same with Pelosi, god forbid someone says something not complementary to either and some people on DU will go after who ever wrote it very hard.

We are either Democrats, Liberals who are open to other people's opinions, analyze them, verify them to find out if they are true or we end up like republicans who shut their ears, their eyes and will not accept anything negative about the creature or any of the republican crooks, that is how fanatics act.

I have read so many entries in DU that start by asking not to be vilified, crucified because they are about to say something he/she knows Biden or Pelosi sympathizers won't like. We need to stop this, we are all entitled to our opinions.

Sat Sep 14, 2019, 08:15 PM

She was part of a panel who discussed the debate after it happened, and she was all praise for Biden that evening. Maybe she has learned more about him, maybe she has seen more of him that has put her off. It has happened to a lot of people.

We need to be open minded, if we can't do that then we are in big trouble, we have to listen to everyone and accept their opinions, that will most probably not change what we think about our candidate but to vilify them and turn them off will not help anyone.

Do we actually want MSNBC to be like Fox News where only praise to republicans happen? Where they go to extremes to defend what cannot not be defended? This is not how Democrats/Liberal are, we are open minded.

I may not agree with her opinion, but I will listen to her and find out if there is any validity on what she said. When I vote for the candidate I like I want to make sure I have turned every stone and that I am very clear of his/her good and bad attributes, but putting plugs inside my ears will not allow me to do that. Just because she doesn't support my candidate doesn't mean that the rest of what she does is not good for Democracy.

She had on a guest who thinks what Biden said was horrible, and her guest is correct. As he said, the Trump campaign will neutralize the charges of racism by pointing to Biden's subtler form of racism, which will suppress Dem turnout.

Sat Sep 14, 2019, 08:29 PM
Sep 2019

"You're calling me ignorant because I don't know who Tim Wise is?"

The ignorance in question is precisely about not knowing who Tim Wise is. Effie isn't saying you're ignorant (in general) and the proof is that you don't know who Tim Wise is. Effie simply said that you're touting your ignorance of who Tim Wise is. But your response clearly suggests that Effie is accusing you of being ignorant in general, and you know that isn't what Effie was saying. So do all of those who got involved in this "two part discussion" to back you up with comments about how what Effie said is uncalled for (of course, I notice that you're not telling those folks to 'mind yours').

The point all along has been that there are many people (Tim Wise being just one of the more prominent ones) horrified by what Biden said in response to a question about repairing the legacy of slavery (he chose to suggest Black parents don't know how to parent). But instead of people on DU being outraged by what Biden said, they're outraged that Reid would have on a guest who drew attention to the fact that what Biden said was outrageous. Shameful.

Sat Sep 14, 2019, 08:48 PM

...a false narrative about what happened in 2016 and why.

People honestly seem to think the key to winning is flipping Trump voters in PA, MI and WI. As opposed to boosting turnout among our base. Hundreds of thousands fewer people showed up for Clinton than showed up for Obama in key battleground states, but people think flipping Trump voters is the key. It's madness.

Jamelle Bouie wrote a piece about the Obama-Trump voter that I've posted several times before: https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2016/11/why-did-some-white-obama-voters-for-trump.html

People can't seem to grasp that A) some racists voted for Obama (like the racists who are married to a person of color and, therefore, can't be racist) following 8 years of Bush-Cheney and B) some of those Obama voters had become completely blinded by racism after 8 years of racist attacks on Obama (and are never coming back). Instead, they insist that a key to winning in 2020 is winning back a fraction of a fraction of voters who happened to vote for both Obama and Trump (due to *white* economic anxiety, 'cause - you know - POC don't experience economic anxiety). And, therefore, we need to nominate an old white man to defeat an old white man. Again, it's madness.

Jamil Smith of Rolling Stone is exactly right that non-racism isn't enough. We need someone well-versed in anti-racism. That ain't Biden.

If Biden is the nominee, Trump surrogates will be out in force (on social media especially) pointing to racist and sexist remarks made by Biden. It will suppress turnout. The problem in 2016 wasn't that Obama voters voted for Trump. The problem was one of turnout. Hundreds of thousands of people in key battleground states who had voted for Obama but would never vote for Trump either didn't vote or voted third party.

Turning out the base has to be the focus. Not flipping Trump voters.

Sep 2019

it's not 2016 anymore.

Every election is different, we will have had four years of Trump, he's a known quantity now.

So everyone who keeps referencing 2016 as if that's exactly how it's all going to go down again with no changes and Trump can do the exact same things and win the exact same way...well, I just have to shake my head at that.

He hadn't put kids in cages in 2016, he hadn't compared anti-racist protestors to KKK assholes, he hadn't done about a dozen things back then.

If our side won't turnout to stop Trump because Joe Biden is the nominee, then our side sucks and this country is fucked and deserves what it gets. End of story.

I don't give a flying fig about Trump voters either. But if our side cannot put aside whatever disappointment they have over Biden to get rid of Trump then our side deserves Trump. It's our nominee or Trump. That's it. Whomever it is.
If you sit out, you are voting for Trump. Period. No discussion.

So I don't want to hear it. I don't want Biden. I don't want Bernie. I don't want another old white guy. I want a woman. Harris or Warren preferably. But if it's Biden, or Bernie or the guy who fucking delivers my mail, I'm going to be out there voting, calling and doing whatever it is I can to get that person elected President. No held noses, no regrets, no disappointment, with a song in my heart.

So, our side either needs to be ready to suck it up and get on-board, or lose. And that's going to be the same regardless of who the nominee is.

The "name recognition" argument is a little stale at this point. Sanders and Warren aren't even remotely unknowns.

Sanders ran a high-profile campaign four years ago and came into this campaign with name recognition on par with Biden's.

Warren gained unwarranted national attention when Trump made his childish remarks about her heritage.

It was her guest, Anand Giridharadas, and he made a very good point, IMHO. He said that after he made comments about Biden’s latest gaffe he was contacted by people from the tRump campaign who were eager to supply him with more examples of Biden’s out-of-date thinking. Giridharadas pointed out that this shows that Team tRump is already weaponizing Biden’s gaffes to use as a bludgeon to neutralized charges against tRump being a racist.

In her defense, Joy played devil’s advocate, in fact, and posed counter arguments to AG’s POV.

with a public option and not for abolition of private insurance, then I'm middle of the road too. I think most of the Democratic Party is on the same page with Obama. That's why Biden is leading in the polls. Biden is trying to win 350 EV's to smash Trump in the election and his policy plans will do that. Biden is where there voters and that's why he'll win big.

That need to be fixed in the ACA, as most big,new programs are. We would have had them fixed if voters had not listened to the fear tactics and voted Republican.

Voters showed in the Town Hall meetings they wanted both the ACA and the fixes. They came out in droves in 2018. They will have another chance in 2020. See if they have learned anything.

118. Inspiring? We do not need to cancel 95 percent of student debt or put another 200 a month into
Sat Sep 14, 2019, 11:05 PM
Sep 2019

everyone’s social security, poor and rich alike, when we have massive foreclosures, inadequate welfare funding, homeless children, millions thrown off food stamps, lack of job training, child protection services throughout the nation unable to monitor for abuse, meals on wheels programs going under., Medicaid cuts to home services, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security all in danger..infrastructure anyone? Public education? Serious need in many areas of the country fo4 updated dispatch services, better resourced EMS and firefighting? Adoption and foster family services in terrible shape?

I mean almost every ExISTING social safety net program is in jeopardy, but since protecting those is not inspired, bold, young, new we get plans catering to certain demographics or a problem de jour. Do we need 200 billion dollars thrown at the Opioid rehab industry when a) rehab is predominantly faith-based b) experts agree suboxone and therapy the best treatment available and that is covered by Medicaid and Medicare? Alcohol is our number one drug problem, but yeah
a massive investment in Opioid addiction treatment SOUNDS sexier. Could we invest five o4 ten or twenty billion?

How about save trillions so we can help vulnerable populations and just getting loan forgiveness programs operable, freezing interest during hardship or forebearance, bring down the interest rates going forward, cancel on an income basis, but not raise folk’s taxes for a giveaway to under forties with high paying jobs who took out huge loans! Not while working class folks are losing their homes!

This scattershot approach to income equality may make for voter excitement, but does little to
fix deep, socioeconomic inequities, to prioritize our needs, to address those the worst off in America and yet these bold plans often reward people who Do Not Need more rewards.

PS I owe student loans. I will have paid some times over by the time I finish paying. I would be in Bernie’s or Liz’s enormous group of those eligible for amnesty, But I look around and I see mentally ill with no housing, elderly foreclosed upon, a whole community gentrified out of existence, and I have to say, no thanks to your inspiring waste of money we can ill afford.

No thanks. Fix what we have and are in danger of losing first. And start talking about the deficit.
Do not ask me to pay higher taxes so affluent people can get more social security money!!

Reid doesn't have to say it directly "Biden drop out".. she's promoting it.

Maye James-Holler I don’t agree with your guest! Sure he could have handle the question better. But when i see how ALL the channels put Trump in the White House by giving him free publicity, as he lied everyday and couldn’t answer a damn question so he called people names. That didn’t bother the pundits, when Joe makes a mistake or a gaffe, oh my, lets kick him out. PLEASE!!! I’m a person of color and I’m for JOE!

Debbie Marijanovich It's obvious that many MSNBC hosts have their favorites! They have been after Biden before he even tossed his hat in the ring

Bonnie Blancett Anand Giridharadas is insufferable. I watched that interview. There was no respect for Vice President Biden. And, I'm sick of Joy having these people on with their immature points of view. All they want is purity. Have they lived seasoned lives. NO! Have they the ability to appreciate anyone before their existence. And shame on Julian Castro for daring to think he has more sway with Obama than Biden. Even Warren dodges confrontation. Did Joe melt into the background when attacked? NO! He was stunned but stood his ground. Joe would never stoop to the behavior of these jealous, self serving people. ie, Booker and Castro. He has my vote, my family's vote, and most of us are older. We know what it means to be a true Democrat.

Asiwaju Femi Falade Nonsense, Joe Biden drop out? I like Joy Reid, but one thing I have noticed about her, is that she is always happy to report negative news about Joe Biden. I am really getting tired of this so called liberal and progressive media, they like to batch their own politicians, most especially if they don't want certain politician to get to a certain position. They did the same thing with Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election. They devoted about 75% of their time covering negative stories about Hillary Clinton e.g email scandal, server sandal, Benghazi scandal etc. Enough is enough.
