...where, as the name suggests, steaks were served to attendees in an outdoor picnic setting. Each event would have one or more featured guest speakers, and the event in the year before a Presidential election would have many of the Presidential candidates. When Harkin retired, the Polk County (Des Moines) Democratic Party took on the event.

(FWIW - there are vegetarian options available as well).

When my daughter lived in Iowa and was active in Iowa politics, she never missed a steak fry. She met Elizabeth Edwards and John Kerry. I have pictures somewhere of her with Harkin, and of Bill Clinton giving a speech (what else) while standing in the back of a pickup truck.

I wish I could go. My husband is still recovering from surgery, and I have obligations to two events that are more local. I can't neglect our grassroots in Illinois.
