Most Democratic senators are staying neutral in a presidential race that includes six sitting senators along with Biden, who served for decades in the Senate before becoming former President Obamas vice president. .
Another factor is the race for the Senate. Some Democrats think it will be easier to win races in conservative-leaning states such as Alabama, North Carolina and Georgia if Biden is their nominee and not Warren or Sanders.
One Democratic senator who requested anonymity to discuss the race said a number of senators neutral in the race are more aligned with Biden.
Ideologically, theyre definitely more with Biden, said the Democratic senator, who described colleagues as having doubts about Warrens and Sanderss boldest proposals.

I do agree that Biden's moderate stance does make him more appealing to more conservative voters than Warren or Sanders. I have conservative friends who've mentioned the same.

(12,994 posts)they were probably asked about how they feel about the candidates and chose to remain anonymous. As i've said, it's their prerogative. President Obama, for example, remained silent all through the period prior to the primaries, then endorsed Hillary once she won the nomination.

MANY dont want to take sides in a battle that is pitting colleagues against one another, and senators obviously dont want to create bad blood with any contenders who will either return to the Senate or end up at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Yet A NUMBER of Democrats privately acknowledge that if Warren or Sanders wins the nomination, it will create immediate tension within the party.
---
The author later mentions that 5 Democratic Senators have endorsed Biden - is "5" out of 49 the number? About 10%?
---
I *WILL* support Biden if he wins the nomination. The article in The Hill is weak journalism at best. At worst, it is an attempt to manipulate Democrats to make a decision and plead their loyalty to one candidate well before it is time to vote.

45 Democratic Party Senators. 2 Independent Senators that caucus with us = Total 47
Harris, Warren, Klobuchar, Booker, Gillibrand, and Sanders are all running = Total 6
Total remaining 41 available for endorsing.
Number of sitting senators that have endorsed Biden? 5 (Jones, Feinstein, Carper, Coons, Casey)
So, even this early in the primary process, Biden has racked up 12% of the remaining available Senate endorsements.
Bernie so far has 1 with his co-Senator from Vermont Patrick Leahy.
I have failed to identify a concise list of Senator Warrens endorsements, if someone has a link to a list, I will most happily update with her own numbers.

(42,862 posts)According to the pattern of your previous analysis and "interpretation"... if someone had written:
ALL people who love cats are:
Generous
Caring
Real Animal Lovers
... would you then presume to be offended by coming up with some outlandish "interpretation" about how the writer was supposedly suggesting that if someone doesn't love cats (or if they love dogs more) then that person is:
NOT Generous
Uncaring
NOT Real Animal Lovers
Here's another: "Women who wear basic black are very chic and stylish." --- I suppose (using some outlandish pretzel logic and interpretation) this could be twisted to mean that women who wear other colors are classless slobs. Eh? But that would be wrong... and silly.

(4,387 posts)- If (generous, caring, real animal lover)
- Then (loves cats)
No. That means if you dont love cats, you cant be all three of those things at once. Even if you reverse the statement:
- If (loves cats)
- Then (generous, caring, real animal lover)
Thats also inaccurate as there are certainly people who love cats who arent generous or caring.
Similarly:
If (level-headed, realistic, real Democrat)
Then (hopes Biden wins)
Also, no. Its possible to be all three of those things and hope someone else wins the primary. Its the real [whatever you want here] part of the statements that are more problematic than the other two qualifiers. It suggests that you arent a real Democrat if you dont support Biden. Or maybe you are a real Dem but youre either not level-headed or unrealistic.
On your fashion example, you didnt explicitly say that you can only be part of the larger group (fashionable people) by wearing black, so that example simply doesnt work. In order for it to be incorrect like the other examples youd have to do this:
- If (chic, stylish, only fashionable outfit)
- Then (wears black)
Reverse it:
- If (wears black)
- Then (chic, stylish, only fashionable outfit)
Once again, no. There are many ways to be fashionable and they arent limited to just black.

(3,256 posts)1. There is no if-then-else statement, particularly note that there is no "else" statement.
2. The predicates are determined in "one or more of" paradigm.
3. As another poster wrote above, it is a multivariate discriminant and thus needs to be evaluated using "Mahalanobis distance" and not a binary "on or off" or "either or". Multivariate discriminants have multiple shades.
4. Multivariate discriminants have no corollaries because of the shades involved. The shades are evaluate by "preponderence of" logic and not "absence or presence of" logic. (Ref. Cat lover analogy vide supra.)

"In order to participate in the Democratic Primaries forum you must set your current first-choice candidate preference."
So is he not really your preference?
By selecting Buttigieg, you did.
Since they said you can't be level-headed, realistic, or a real Democrat all at the same time without supporting Biden in the primary, yes they did.

Don't believe me? In the 2016 Dem (we have closed primaries) primary, Bernie got a lot of support in the "red" areas of Pennsylvania where he either beat Clinton or ran nearly even with her.
No Dem will ever win over the Trump cultists, but there are voters who went for Trump because they felt alienated from the federal gov't, that the federal gov't just doesn't "work for them" or work in their interests. Absolutely both Warren and Sanders appeal to those voters.

The most obvious is Bidens consistent strength in head-to-head polls against Trump. You can remind people all day long that these are unreliable indicators of how a general-election campaign will actually play out, but they wont be able to ignore them. And Bidens advantage here is significant. There is not a single poll in the RealClearPolitics database of 2020 trial heats between Biden and Trump in which Biden does not lead. His current lead in RCPs polling averages is an enormous 11.5 percent (Sanderss is 7.0 percent, and Warrens is 5.2 percent, but both have trailed Trump in some surveys).
A second factor making Biden Mr. Electable is the widespread belief among pundits and voters alike that, all things being equal, proximity to the political center is a general-election asset. The more we approach a three-candidate nominating contest in which Bidens only real challenge comes from Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, the more Bidens relative moderation will become evident. That may hurt him with some primary voters, but it could at the same time enhance his perceived electability.
A third factor some analysts focus on is the practical ability to win voters the party lost in 2016 either to Trump or to third parties or to the living-room couch. Theres at best limited evidence that Biden is more popular than other Democrats in the much-chewed-over white working-class demographic (especially Obama-Trump voters). But he certainly talks about his focus on these voters a lot, which enhances the perception they are his people. And he certainly has conspicuous strength among African-American voters, whose fall-off in turnout was a big problem for Hillary Clinton in 2016. Biden does not look like a good bet to energize younger voters, but Trump might well do that for him...
Risk-averse is probably the most important term to remember in assessing Democratic voters heading toward 2020. They still dont entirely understand how Hillary Clinton managed to lose to Donald Trump in 2016, but they arent inclined to take anything for granted this time around. And that will make it difficult for candidates other than Biden to convince Democrats their other qualities are worth taking a bit of a risk on. Sure, Biden could in theory blow himself up with some high-profile gaffe that undermines the very premise of his candidacy. But thats not within anyone elses control.
