In Fundraising Email, Sanders Calls O'Rourke's First-Day Haul 'Bad News'

By Kate Riga
March 18, 2019 3:27 pm

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) broke with the general friendliness that has characterized how the 2020 Democratic contenders have spoken about each other so far, sending out a fundraising blast where he calls Beto O’Rourke’s $6.1 million first-day haul “bad news.”

The subject line reads: “Bad news: Beto outraised us. Good news: we probably had a lot more donations.”

“Here is the truth: this morning, Beto O’Rourke announced that he raised more money than us on the first day of his presidential campaign,” the email says. “The good news is, we more than likely had a lot more individual donations than he did.”

“But what that means is if we are going to avoid getting outspent, it’s going to take lots and lots of people making individual donations to catch up,” it continues. “We already have that… but we have to pick up the pace.”

O’Rourke topped Sanders’ first-day sum, $5.9 million, which had previously led the pack. He is unlikely to hit back at the Vermont senator, since he has pledged to keep his campaign positive.

Was he supposed to say "hey great - Beto took in 6 million so we don't have to do anything - everyone should just drop out?"

Truly if everyone would just support their candidate and not be so eager to try to find something they can pretend is scandalous - we would all be a lot better and as Democrats be able to be competitive in the primary and rally around the nominee in the general.

Oh -- I did donate again to Sanders. So it worked. Then since I was already donating - gave a little to Elizabeth and a little to Pete as well!

He's just rallying his team. That's totally legit. I find the wealth of choices we have this time around refreshing and exhilerating. If Bernie raises a bit more, good on him. We should all be so passionate about our causes.

But if he puts out some real policy initiatives I can get behind . . . I'm open. I'm open to many like Harris or Inslee before him. Just as I'm open to Warren and Buttigieg before them. But real discussion on policy differences would be so welcome. This kind of stuff is just like a white noise here to see people looking so hard for something about someone they don't like just so they can stir more shit up.

We are too more popular! The failed corporate approach of the political, financial and media elite are terrified of our progressive agenda (which is totally brand new) and will stop at nothing to defeat us. We faced the kitchen sink and will face it again. The Wall Street Democrat and Third Way pots and pans and dishes have been left in the sink all day without soaking. Last time we ran, we made the financial elite pay a price for their attacks on our totally brand new progressive agenda. Let's make sure everyone pays the price.

Since we know the Mercers and Kochs and the old fart casino guy (too early to look his name up) will pour hundreds of millions into the Trump campaign, I find it disheartening that Sanders would denigrate Beto's first day haul and he has NO IDEA how many individual donors Beto had. ZIP, NADA.

Now Bernie is asking for $3, which means he's trying to get his number of donors up but his average donation amount down. I supported him in 2016. This time he's just pissing me off.

It's a 'Bad News/Good News' fundraising letter. It's in teh context of 'what it means to our campaign'.

I'm not a huge Bernie guy but I am a 'fairness' guy, and you're not being fair here. Nothing wrong with this letter whatsoever.
