Beto O'Rourke, Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders competitive against Donald Trump in Texas, UT-Tyler poll shows

WASHINGTON — Beto O'Rourke remains competitive against President Donald Trump in a Texas head-to-head matchup, according to a poll released Thursday by the Center for Opinion Research at the University of Texas at Tyler.

The poll, conducted over three days following last week's debate in Houston, shows O'Rourke polling better against Trump in a head-to-head matchup than every other Democratic contender except former Vice President Joe Biden.

Both led Trump by 2 percentage points in hypothetical matchups. Four other candidates tested against Trump lagged behind the president, though Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont trailed by less than the 2.8-percentage-point margin of error.

O'Rourke's campaign boasted that the results vindicate his stance on gun control. He has caught flak from members of both parties since forcefully demanding mandatory buybacks of assault weapons in the Houston debate.

Pete Buttigieg 3.2
Everyone else 1.0 or less

In a general election, Beto was ahead of Trump by 2.3% while Biden was ahead of Trump by 1.6%. None of the other candidates were ahead of Trump in a general election matchup.

Texans are pissed. Lack of gun control solutions and border wall shit. Trump single handedly accelerated Texas flipping blue. Won't be 2024 or 2028. Possibly 2020 or 2022
