Democratic Primaries

There was an air of excitement in the crowd that you might not expect for a rally this early in the raceNorth Carolina is a Super Tuesday state, and wont hold its primary until March 3, 2020and it was obvious that people wanted to get to Bernie as soon as possible. It felt like everyone around me expected the UNC Young Democrats chair to introduce Sanders a half-hour into the early evening rally; when she instead introduced legendary leftist academic Dr. Adolph Reeda UNC graduate himselfthere was polite applause and more than a few exasperated laughs. When Sanders finally hit the stage, however, the crowd exploded, and proceeded to hang onto his every word for the entirety of his nearly 40-minute long speech.

No presidentIm the only candidate who will tell you this, maybe the only candidate whos ever said thisnot President Bernie Sanders, not anybody else, can do it alone, Sanders said. We cant bring about the changes this country desperately needs just through the president.

For now, however, the focus is on winning on new converts. Theres perhaps no better place to do that on the campus of a large public university, where more than a few in attendance have never cast a ballot before. Those already in Sanders corner dating back to 2016 and beyond are doing their part to spread the word that not only is he differentas well as the original leftist in the racebut also that he is the best: the best candidate to beat Biden, the best candidate to beat Trump, the best candidate to accelerate social progress in this country.
Hes the most transformational candidate of my lifetime, Trushell told me. And I dont think theres been anyone quite like that in national-level politics.

(3,389 posts)His campaign slogan was Yes We Can, for Petes sake. Not Yes I Can. So when he said that no candidate ever told you that except for the Lord Almighty Bernie Sanders...yeah. Hes lying there. Or maybe he just never paid attention. Either way, it sounds pretty egotistical.

(43,107 posts)Without collective values and a sense of belonging to something greater than just oneself there will be no organising principles around which to have a mass traction political movement that is based on social justice and protections for the most vulnerable in society.
A prominent driving meme behind a process that dismisses the collective welfare is a RW favourite, ie. 'rugged individualism.' Rugged individualism is very often held up by people (NOT saying you are doing this btw) who often mislabel things as 'socialist.'
Climate change is a perfect example of where a sense of the collective is absolutely foundational if we are to effectively combat it.

(94,352 posts)While millennial voting was up in 2018, they still represent a proportionally small share of the electorate. I suspect there are more productive ways of reaching out to likely voters than rallies with people already in his corner.

(581 posts)in order to increase attendance -- the party like atmosphere and red-meat talk of "revolution" in yelled out words along with palpable anger creates a militant milieu. It vastly exaggerates his popularity than what it actually is -- 15% (+/- 5) of the electorate.

(581 posts)He will lose in about 6 months with no hope of getting the nomination. After super-Tuesday, he won't be followed by reporters and there will be hardly any news coverage of him because everyone will know that he is finished.
He is already nose-diving in the polls and the trillions of dollars in plans he comes up with offering everything for everyone are roundly ridiculed. This is making his supporters go over the edge as one can see from the WFP attacks and that will make him tank.
He has no chance of winning the primary.

(4,558 posts)Joe Biden speaks in a way that isnt condescending, and often welcoming to swing voters, moderates, Democratic Party members, even to Republicans that may be willing and needed to pass some of the legislation that everyone is promising.. and hes terrible and disqualified.
Bernie Sanders condemns, belittles, and castigates all but his base, turns around and says it will take we, and is wonderful?
Well color me confused.

(25,380 posts)Dividing everyone into Us (his base of anti-establishment "true progressives" ) and Them (Establishment/Democratic Party/anyone not supporting Bernie who therefore cannot be progressive). Yet his plan to get things done as president is to hold rallies, the "We."
