Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumI'm loving Elizabeth Warren right now, but I have one big question.
If she is President and it doesn't look like a mandatory Medicare for All is getting through anytime time soon, would she be willing to move forward with.a Medicare option and potentially insure tens of millions more Americans falling through the ACA cracks?

(108,955 posts)or an interview, or whatever. But she said something to the effect that she could support Medicare as a public option-- as a step on the way to full Medicare for all. She recognized that we need at least Medicare as an option right now, and that establishing Medicare for all will be a lengthy process.
I can't imagine her refusing to sign a public option bill.

(8,745 posts)Elizabeth Warren: So, lets start with the battle were having right now and talk about the things we need to be doing, because I dont want to lose sight of this. Its good to talk about our overall goal, and heres our overall goal. This is what distinguishes Democrats from Republicans. Democrats believe health care is a basic human right. And we fight for basic human rights. Our obligation is to make sure that everybody gets coverage at the lowest possible cost to all of us.
So what does that mean? Right now, it means fighting the Republicans who are trying to sabotage the Affordable Care Act. Weve got this lawsuit going on down in Texas where the Republicans are trying to do what they couldnt do with the vote, and that is trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act, to make it OK to discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions, to cut off access to health care for millions of Americans. So job number one is to defend the affordable care act.
Job number two is to make changes where we need to make them right now. Changes to hold insurance companies accountable when theyre trying to cheat people, when theyre trying to scam people. Changes right now, and whats happening with drugs, prescription drugs. We need to lower the cost of prescription drugs. One in four Americans say they cant take drugs that are prescribed to them because they cant afford to pay for them. I have, for example here, a proposal for generic drugs, which are about 90 percent of prescriptions that people fill, to bring those costs down to just a nominal cost.
And the third, how do we get universal coverage. Medicare for all. Lots of paths for how to do that. But we know where we are aiming. And that is, every American has health care at a price they can afford. And that the overall costs in the system are held as low as possible.
Weisenthal: But right now, your vision for Medicare for all, would it all be a public option, or would it also include private insurance.
Warren: So right now, there are multiple bills on the floor in the United States Senate. Ive signed onto Medicare for All. Ive signed on to another one that gives an option for buying in to Medicaid. There are different ways we can get there. But the key has to be always keep the center of the bullseye in mind. And that is affordable health care for every American.

(714 posts)When she sits down to the bargaining table, she will be starting from a further to the left position. We the people will get a much better deal than we would with a President that starts the negotiations from the middle. The President that starts with MFA, could compromise with a Public Option (which if done right, would eventually lead to MFA). But, if the President starts with a Public Option, chances are, they wont get it and the new watered-down ACA fix will still allow millions to fall through the cracks.
This is true for all aspects of governing. The President that starts further to the left, will end up with better results.

(20,628 posts)this topic by making a fantastic point - he stated that ANY health care plan passed by a Democratic Congress will get a signature from ANY Democratic President that may be occupying the Oval Office!
In other words, "President Bernie Sanders" WILL SIGN a bill that simply moves the ACA forward if that is what Congress has passed, and "President Joe Biden" WILL SIGN a Medicare for All bill if that is what Congress has passed.
