In all of political campaigning, the one line not to be crossed is to leave family members out of the campaign rhetoric. By going after Hunter, Trump has crossed that line, turning Joe from a sharply spoken candidate, into a protective, enraged father. Not someone that Trump is going to want to face on the campaign trail. Which leads into the second point...

Trump has made this personal for Joe.
By making it personal, it goes from being a campaign to a blood feud. I have no doubt that Joe will do everything he can to totally humiliate Trump and make him an international laughingstock, who will be publicly rediculed, even by his base, when Joe is done, whether he wins the nomination or not.
