Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumCNN/Register: 63% think most electable candidate will seek common ground with Republicans
And only 41% think Medicare For All is a winning issue to run on.
https://www.cnn.com/2019/09/21/politics/iowa-poll-2020-democrats/index.html
Clear majorities say that they are personally comfortable with policies that would raise taxes on the wealthy (74%) and restore the ban on assault-style weapons (69%) and they feel candidates ought to run on those positions. Fewer felt the same about the Green New Deal (48%), "Medicare for All" (41%), free tuition for public colleges (36%) and moving the country in a socialist direction (20%).
Views on Medicare for All in particular are starkly divided between those backing Warren or Sanders -- the strongest proponents of such a plan among the Democratic candidates -- and those who favor other candidates. Among supporters of Warren or Sanders, 63% say they're comfortable with Medicare for All and want candidates to run on it, while among those backing other candidates, just 29% feel the same way.
Btw, Biden's made it clear he'll raise taxes on the wealthy. And he'll restore the ban on assault weapons.

(1,812 posts)These poll results seems like a throwback to the Democratic Party of the 90's Not the Democratic Party of Today

(776 posts)An overwhelming majority of Democrats are center-left. In only a few pockets do we see extreme left positions.

(43,353 posts)Ridiculous.
One simple example is LGBTQ civil rights. In the 90's Clinton and so many others tried to keep us in the closet with bullshit like DADT, and were totally against gay marriage with rot like DOMA.
Also, in the 1990's your candidate was speaking like this:
try rolling with that now

(6,568 posts)Hell, Id be ok with moving it back to center. Weve shifted so rightward that the average American sees conservative Democrat positions as far left ideas.
As a country, we are fucking stupid. So many vote against their best interests. So many who are uneducated yet are overly confident that they are intelligent.

(595 posts)They have moved so far to the right that common ground does nothing for progressive policies. We need to have the same philosophy as the Republicans, take no prisoners. We have to push hard for what we know people need and want. No more incremental changes.

(1,176 posts)with republicans. That is a joke. It is their way or no way. They will never work with Democrats on anything. Republicans would rather burn the whole country down before they work with Dems.

(776 posts)Too bad we needed a poll for this.
It is like saying 83% think salt is salty or 92% think ice is cold.

(714 posts)Do you want to seek common ground with white supremist and spineless enablers of a President that completely ignores the rule of law (aka, the GOP) or do you want to move America to the left, to the American ideal of liberty and justice for all? Put it that way and you would get a much better idea of where most Americans stand.
These are the two sides we have to choose from, and the Democratic nominee has to make it very, very clear. No Kumbaya with a bunch of Nazis!

Best response to the seeking common ground question. 👍

(1,812 posts)This DM/CNN sample seems to project a scenario where 65% of Caucus attendees will be moderates ... If history is an indicator moderates will comprise around 35% of the Iowa Caucus Electorate

(13,991 posts)but I believe polls show the public supports a wealth tax also. Hopefully Biden would sign that if it came to his desk.

(52,161 posts)that isn't going to happen either. There is no reaching out to the GOP. There is no cooperation with the GOP. The GOP has made it clear in ways both big and small that they are having none of it.
