New York Times battered on MSNBC for pushing smear of Hunter Biden in order to maintain access to Trump

https://www.rawstory.com/2019/09/new-york-times-battered-on-msnbc-for-pushing-smear-of-hunter-biden-in-order-to-maintain-access-to-trump/

An “AM Joy” panel jumped all over the New York Times for pushing a widely debunked smear of Hunter Biden promoted by Donald Trump, saying the newspaper is more interested in maintaining their access to the Oval Office than debunking the lie.

Speaking with host Joy Reid — who noted that her producers asked for comment from the Times but were rebuffed — MSNBC regular Maria Teresa Kumar scorched the Times, as well as reporter Ken Vogel, for the uncritical parroting of the president’s smear.

Pointing to Vogel’s story and noting his source was a Breitbart writer, Kumar explained, “The biggest challenge, Ken Vogel does not declare the source , that Peter Schweizer, is underwritten by the Mercer family — the Mercer family is a neo-facist family that underwrites Steve Bannon and the Breitbart Report so it is not credible.”

The second quarter numbers in August revealed:

The New York Times also said it added 197,000 new digital-only subscribers during the period, bringing the publication's total subscriber base to 4.7 million.

Subscription sales are expected to jump by low-to mid-single digits in the third quarter, with digital-only subscription revenue climbing in the mid-teens.

Their digital subscriptions have been growing pretty steadily the past couple years.

2018 was 27% up on 2017.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/06/business/media/new-york-times-earnings-digital-subscriptions.html

I have seen the 40% figure claimed a few times in different contexts, but I have yet to see what the figure is based on.

especially in coverage of national politics, is its tropism to power. And the problem seems to get worse in presidential election cycles. Given the frequency of "issues" lately, I've also found myself wondering whether there might not also be a problem with the editor or at least with their editorial and fact-check procedures.
Not that the NYT can't do good reporting, even excellent reporting, on national politics - but, because of my frustrations with their politics reporting over the last ~15-20 years, I tend to rely more on the Washington Post for coverage of national/presidential politics, especially now that WaPo has a first-rate editor. WaPo of course isn't perfect, either.
In general, I guess the lesson is: it's dangerous to rely on a single news source for anything. Plus, given the disinformation campaign that's going to flood us over the next year, everyone needs to be vigilant about information sources and hidden bias, anyway.

33. Former Ukraine prosecutor says Hunter Biden "did not violate anything"
Thu Sep 26, 2019, 02:21 PM
Sep 2019

A former top Ukrainian prosecutor, whose allegations were at the heart of the dirt-digging effort by Rudolph W. Giuliani, said Thursday he believed that Hunter Biden did not run afoul of any laws in Ukraine.

“From the perspective of Ukrainian legislation, he did not violate anything,” former Ukrainian prosecutor general Yuri Lutsenko told The Washington Post in his first interview since the disclosure of a whistleblower complaint alleging pressure by President Trump on Ukraine’s president, Volodymr Zelensky.

Lutsenko’s comments about Hunter Biden — which echo what he told Bloomberg News in May — were significant, because Trump and his personal attorney Giuliani have sought to stir up suspicions about both Hunter and former vice president Joe Biden’s conduct in Ukraine in recent weeks. Joe Biden is leading Trump in many opinion polls ahead of the 2020 election.

Hunter Biden has denied any wrongdoing, and there is no evidence he was involved in any lawbreaking in his work in Ukraine with the country’s largest private gas company.

He was chief investigative reporter at Politico, since its founding in 2007. In June 2017, he joined the Washington Bureau of The New York Times as a reporter covering conflicts of interest, lobbying, and money in politics.

This is the guy who got in hot water for going to the DNC with a draft of an investigative news article he authored about Hillary Clinton's fundraising with the DNC ahead of publication. He's hardly a hit man.
