(48,790 posts)Take Bernie supporters, subtract out many of the white liberals, and those that remain will just by the arithmetic be less white, more populated with people of color. Those that remain could be called the "residue" in a cold clinical sense, but it is too demeaning and too resonant with historical discrimination to be used for that purpose and Silver should have chosen a term with a less negative connotation, such as "those remaining".
Silver's point of course is that Bernie has not attracted more people of color but instead has lost whites.

(35,619 posts)"In mathematics, more specifically complex analysis, the residue is a complex number proportional to the contour integral of a meromorphic function along a path enclosing one of its singularities. (More generally, residues can be calculated for any function f : C ∖ { a k } k → C {displaystyle f:mathbb {C} setminus {a_{k}}_{k}rightarrow mathbb {C} } f:mathbb {C} setminus {a_{k}}_{k}rightarrow mathbb {C} that is holomorphic except at the discrete points {ak}k, even if some of them are essential singularities.)"

(48,790 posts)In statistics, with regression analysis, after you remove the amount of the estimated curve matching the data, the amount left at each data point is known as the "residuals".
Complex analysis is a branch of mathematics involving fluid flow and field theory and is distant from statistics.

(48,790 posts)You made a "rofl" point of emphasizing the definition of residue by highlighting one of the less negative examples. As if to make light of the racial equation Nate Silver inadvertently made in his tweet. Read his tweet again.
Residue is more frequently discarded or called disgusting than it is eaten. Coffee grounds are residue, and so are dog poop, plastic collected for recycling, and mine tailing ponds.
People of colour are sick and tired of being equated with unwanted trash. For you to make light of that with rofl emoticons and uncomprehending posts ("I don't get it" ) is actually an opportunity for you to get a bit more "woke".

(67,782 posts)....after many of them switch to Warren. He did NOT specify race, religion, sexual orientation, or anything else, just that they are more "diverse" (that's the word he used)
"Diverse" means white, black, brown, Asian (btw, Nina Turner used the offensive word "yellow" to referr to Asians a couple of weeks ago, with no uproar from BS' supporters!), all religions, all sexual orientations, etc.
Seems like the OP, Ms. Gray, and some of the posters here immediately jumped to the (incorrect) conclusion that he was only referring to people of color.
Why is that? Seems to me that those outraged have some explaining to do.

(48,790 posts)I did ask you to read his tweet again. I repeat that request.
His equation: Sanders_supporters = prev_Sanders_supporters minus "white liberals"
He called the Sanders_supporters (after subtracting the "white liberals" ) the "residue". At best (and also most likely) it was a clumsy choice of words by a nerd.
People of colour (non-whites) do not like to be called "residue" or lumped in a bin called residue, whether or not it was merely clumsy. I would have thought you would understand that.

(67,782 posts)...would have remaining when the "white liberals" leave is people of color?
People are making much more of this than they really should, I suspect because their preferred candidate is dropping in the polls and they're looking for any reason they can come up with to explain it.
Nate Silver's comment was NOT racially motivated, and most people did not see it that way - mostly because his "residue" included supporters of ALL races and demographics.
Finally, were you or any others equally "appalled" when it came out that Sanders blatantly spoke about blacks using the "N" word or Nina Turner referred to Asians a few weeks ago as "yellow people"?
Doubtful.

(7,681 posts)Assuming that tweet is even real to begin with.
Sanders has the most working class support. This is indisputable.
--
An OpenSecrets review of campaign contributions including those giving small amounts through the fundraising service ActBlue reveals that among the 2020 Democrats, Sanders gets the most support from Americans in typically working-class jobs and it isnt close.
The Vermont senator is the top recipient among farmers, servers, social workers, retail workers, photographers, construction workers, truckers, nurses and drivers, among several other groups. Each of those professions which dont typically provide much campaign cash earn near or below the median income, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

You do realize you have a rather lengthy post history that suggests otherwise, no?

Are you really trying to suggest you know what you think I'm trying to suggest?
By the way, from the FEC filings for the campaign, the highest numbers of contributions from those working came from (1-12 in order):
Software Engineer
Teacher
Engineer
Physician
Attorney
Professor
Sales
Consultant
Software Developer
RN
Financial Director
Lawyer
Not many "working class" occupations in that list.
On the other hand, for the occupations you provided, here are their ranks:
farmers - 97
servers - 53 ("server" , 575 ("food server"
social workers - 25
retail workers - 51
photographers - 62
construction workers - 132
truckers - 751
nurses - 10
drivers - 765
The devil is in the details!
