Hispanic lawmakers eye leap to Biden

Several Congressional Hispanic Caucus members have quietly lobbied CHC Chairman Joaquin Castro to persuade his brother
Julián to drop out of the presidential race and run for Senate in Texas

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus has largely stayed out of the presidential primary so far — partly out of respect for Julián Castro, the only Latino in the race and the brother of CHC Chairman Joaquin Castro.

But with Julián languishing at the bottom of polls with around 1 percent support, at least a handful of the group’s 38 members are on the verge of announcing their support for Joe Biden, according to sources familiar with the effort.

Their impact could provide an adrenaline boost in a Democratic contest where most campaigns are struggling to win over Hispanic voters — a bloc that will play a key role in early-state Nevada and on Super Tuesday.

“It’s kind of a work in progress, but I’m pretty confident there will be substantial Congressional Hispanic Caucus support for the vice president over the course of the next month,” said Rep. Filemon Vela (D-Texas), who, along with Reps. Vicente Gonzalez (D-Texas) and Lou Correa (D-Calif.), is leading the effort to rally the CHC behind Biden.

Biden and California Sen. Kamala Harris currently lead the Democratic primary field in CHC endorsements with three apiece.

“I know for a fact that if Biden doesn’t get elected in the primary next year, we’re gonna have Trump as a president again,” said Gonzalez, who switched his endorsement earlier this month from Julián Castro to Biden.

7. Of course he would say that at this point. His eye is on the presidential prize.

Things will start to evolve once more candidates start to drop out.

No good candidate is going to say, "sure, if I lose, I'll run for senate." That would be a weird message, really, since it presupposes a negative outcome.

2. Shameful Vicente Gonzalez for his comment "I know for a fact that if Biden doesn't get elected..."

Instead, he should be pushing for Latinos to support ANY Democrat who becomes the nominee...shame on him. Latinos are so ill informed about politics that this comment represents a threat to the Democratic party, how irresponsible.

Latinos will stay home and not vote if Biden is not the nominee because one of his representatives told them it is a lost cause because only Biden can defeat the creature. Same on him!

What "facts" does he have? Where did he get those "facts"?

whoever it is. Hispanics have a low turnout rate traditionally so maybe Biden can help increase voter participation.
