Missing From Elizabeth Warren's 2020 Surge: Democratic Endorsements

New York Times

WASHINGTON — Senator Elizabeth Warren has built her following in part by taking pictures with thousands of voters deep into evening after campaign events, but her dinner audience here one night last month was far smaller. And Ms. Warren’s guests were more interested in hearing, and politely challenging, her campaign pitch than eagerly capturing the moment for posterity on their iPhones.

Addressing a few dozen members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus at a Chinese restaurant a few blocks from the Capitol, she laid out her case for why she could unify Democrats, emphasized that she was not hostile to properly run businesses and made a soft sell to the lawmakers to support her presidential bid.

“She said, ‘Nobody could do this alone, I will need your help,’” recalled Representative Chellie Pingree of Maine, who attended the gathering and said Ms. Warren “was great.”

But just under a month since the family-style meal, the Massachusetts senator has the same small number of endorsements from congressional colleagues beyond her home state as she did beforehand: three.

primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

She is definitely surging in the national polls, but as we should all know too well by now, popular vote doesn't take home the win. There was some shift last month in the battleground state polls, but I'm betting many who offer critical endorsements are watching the battleground polls very closely.

She starts doing better than the Trump vs Biden polls in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona etc.. they will likely start flooding in. I know as soon as I see that my signature is changing.

It's all about 270 to win. swing states are the ones that will make it happen, or give us 4 more years. I do NOT want to wake up on Wednesday November 4th, 2020 with that same feeling of despair and dread that I felt in 2016.

I'm glad to see that MD's Jamie Raskin is a Warren endorser.

IMO, several are waiting for awhile. It is also possible that the campaigns are not actively reaching out for endorsements as much as they did in 2008 and 2016. Getting those early endorsements for 2016 is something that Hillary had learned from the Obama 2008 campaign where it was used with great success. She followed that strategy in 2016, also with great success.

Then those early endorsements were just another of the many things that were, IMO, unfairly held against her in 2016. Remember all the brouhaha about Superdelegates? Hillary was damned if she did and damned if she didn't. That whole situation still infuriates me.

I think that most are being much more cautious this time, so as not to hurt the eventual nominee's chances by playing into the hands of those who will allege that there is favoritism in the so-called "establishment."

But I have to argue that Obama's acquisition of endorsements was different from Clinton's. Obama was not considered to be the likely candidate in 2008 so when he racked up endorsements it enhanced his "electability". There was a strong presumption amongst many that Clinton would be the nominee in 2008. So in 2016, that sense of "her turn" was magnified and when she came out of the gate with strong endorsements it was taken as DNC meddling.

I think that sense of meddling is still in full force so it helps Warren and hurts Biden for him to have so many endorsements.

However, I will concede that the discussion surrounding Biden will be different than Clinton solely due to sexism even though the circumstances are the same.

Both as to Obama's reasons for needing endorsements in 2008 and as to the sexism that is still very much a part of the 2020 equation in re the current Top Two.

Strangely, Barack told Biden to sit out 2016 and then said this time around, "You don’t have to do this, Joe, you really don’t."
