Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumMike Bloomberg keeps talking to allies about running for president as Joe Biden struggles
CNBCBloomberg, the billionaire former mayor of New York, has indicated to associates in recent weeks that Joe Bidens recent struggles against Sen. Elizabeth Warren are making him rethink his decision to stay out of the 2020 Democratic primary. Thats according to people familiar with the discussions who spoke on condition of anonymity because the conversations were deemed private.
Bloomberg has signaled hes still looking at running for president, but people close him say that the only way he could even go down that path is if Bidens fortunes suffer so much that he drops out before or during the early stages of the primary. Bloomberg could then enter the race as one of the rare moderates with enough name recognition and campaign funding to make a run. Forbes estimates his net worth at $51 billion, and he was planning to spend over $100 million on a campaign for president if he ran.
I think its something he wants. He has not been shy about that, one of Bloombergs allies familiar with the talks told CNBC. Nothing can happen unless Biden drops out, and thats not happening anytime soon, this person added.

(53,784 posts)he is as he's a long-time New Yorker and former mayor who is very familiar with trump's shenanigans. IMO he has endless assets to fund his campaign and would beat trump but it's not his time.
We've got a deep bench of candidates.

(576 posts)I agree that New York hates trump but some states will believe (once trump is out) the worst of the state With no fault of its own. They would give the person a hard pass unless
He/she was damn good.
For contexts I live in Texas and you know the president we had some time ago was an idiot. (5 level idiot out of 10 feel free to question the score)

(35,454 posts)when he wangled a deal that disenfranchised NY voters after they twice voted for term limits. It was a scheme cooked up by him and Christine Quinn to give him a 3rd term. WE don't need to suffer having another cheating authoritarian in the WH.

Yeah, this "save the day" stuff is wearing thin. It's also patronizing given the number of quite amazing candidates we have to choose from already.

(53,784 posts)gun ads and is very familiar with trump's fake tycoon/poor businessman shenanigans as he is a long-time New Yorker as well. Bloomberg is a level headed guy, an actual, self-made billionaire, unlike the fake one name trump, has the assets to fund his own campaign wih way more money than the repugs can raise and he hates trump.
He's nothing like trump and would beat him. It's just not his time. We've got a deep bench of candidates.

(43,406 posts)Joe is not dropping out, so I highly doubt Bloomberg gets in.
IF Warren wins the nomination, I am, though, then on tenterhooks waiting to see what Schultz and Bloomberg do. Either or both could really fuck us up versus Rump. Toss in a Gabbard-headed Green (Stein is not running, and they have a weak, weak front runner atm) ticket, plus a poor Libertarian ticket (so far less votes siphoned off from Trump than the 5.2 million votes last time that Johnson and also Evan McMullin (as an indie) pulled) and it would be a disaster waiting to happen.

(16,616 posts)I like Mike Bloomberg but he always pulls this "To run or not to run" act and if he tries to enter the race late, after all the candidates have done the hard work of running for president, I don't think he'd be well received. Secondly, I question the underlying assumption that Biden is in some kind of severe trouble. Thirdly, there are many candidates that can save the day if that happens. Sometimes I think Bloomberg is just lazy. He wants to be president but he doesn't want to run for president.

(10,830 posts)Howard Schultz reconsiders because there's such a hunger for another gazillionaire business man to make a bid for the White House? Because money alone makes them superior, more adept than those with actual governmental experience (for Bloomberg that would be at the national level).

(180 posts)Even if Biden falters, the Dems would never nominate Warren. I believe if Biden falters, someone not currently running would end up getting nomination...Michelle Obama, Bloomberg, Oprah, etc.

(8,745 posts)After that, the math is pretty much impossible except in fantasy land.
Warren would only trounce Biden if she were quite popular. And if that is the case - her favorability is among the highest in the Party, while her unfavorable rating is in the low teens.
You may not like her personally, but you are in the distinct minority.

(180 posts)She is a disrupter. She wants to change everything in the current order in the US. She wants to break up big tech, Wall Street, etc. She wants to take a lot away from powerful people. The Democratic Party is an establishment party by nature. They will never nominate someone like her to become president. I don't dislike Warren at all, but as a student of political history, I would be shocked if she won the nomination.

(15,369 posts)others here, Michael Bloomberg is 77 years old.
He was a good NYC mayor. But he has literally no experience in dealing directly with the DC circus and is wholly a product of the NE. That is not to criticize those candidates who are, but has Bloomberg ever even been outside NY State? (A bit of hyperbole there, I am sure, but still ....)
I also agree with the comment upthread about his "Hamlet Act."
Please just stay home, Michael. Please.
