Kamala Harris: "This is not a matter of free speech."

TIPTON, Ia. — After hearing Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg's defense of unregulated social media platforms Thursday afternoon, U.S. Sen Kamala Harris said the billionaire mischaracterized the problem.

During a speech at Georgetown University, Zuckerberg said tech giants like his should not have to answer to politicians who don't like posts they see online. He contrasted his company with China, saying unregulated expressions leads to social progress.

Harris called on Twitter to suspend the account of President Donald Trump earlier this month. She also supports more federal government oversight of tech conglomerates like Facebook and Amazon.

"This is not a matter of free speech," Harris told reporters after a meet and greet here Thursday. "The constitutional protections of free speech do not include committing a crime, which is what obstruction of justice is. Threatening a witness, doing things that can threaten the safety and lives of real human beings — this is not a matter of free speech. This is a matter of holding corporate America and these big tech companies responsible and accountable for what they are facilitating." https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/elections/presidential/caucus/2019/10/17/kamala-harris-mark-zuckerberg-this-not-matter-free-speech/4014489002/
